Chapter 9 - Whispers in the Dark Penthouse

The silence in the library was deafening.
The slander was venomous, calculated, and designed to ruin my professional reputation forever. If the public believed Vanessa's claims, every design client I had ever worked with would sever ties, and my independent career would be crushed before my child was even born.
I swayed on my feet, the stress threatening to bring back the cramping.
In an instant, Adrian’s arm was around my waist, supporting my entire weight, pulling me securely against his chest. "Breathe, Claire. Look at me."
I looked up into his dark eyes, which were burning with a terrifying, lethal fury.
"Is this ever going to end?" I choked out, tears of frustration spilling over my cheeks. "She won't stop until she destroys everything I've built."
"She won't destroy anything," Adrian said, his voice deadly calm. He pressed his lips against the crown of my head, holding me so tightly I could feel the powerful beat of his heart against my cheek. "Marco, get our chief legal counsel, the head of public relations, and the Manhattan District Attorney on a secure conference line right now."
"Yes, sir," Marco responded instantly.
Adrian gently guided me to the plush leather sofa, kneeling before me, his hands resting on my knees. "Claire, listen to me carefully. Vanessa has crossed a line from pathetic desperation into criminal slander and harassment. For years, I treated her with kid gloves because of my father's memory. That ends tonight."
"What are you going to do?"
"I am going to destroy her," Adrian replied without a hint of hesitation. "I have buried evidence of her financial fraud for three years to protect her father's legacy. Tonight, I hand everything over to federal prosecutors. But first, I am going to clear your name in front of the entire country."
"Adrian, you don't have to drag Moretti Capital into this—"
"Moretti Capital means nothing compared to you and our baby!" he shouted, his raw emotion breaking through his iron discipline. He gripped my hands, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "Do you still not understand, Claire? I built an empire because I thought wealth was the only armor that could protect me. But without you in this house, every dollar I own is worthless. You are my only empire."
The honesty in his words struck me to the core. For three years, I had begged for a glimpse of the man behind the billionaire's mask.
Now, stripped of his pride, Adrian Moretti was baring his soul on his knees in front of me.
I reached out, my fingers trembling slightly as I touched his cheek, feeling the rough stubble along his sharp jaw. "Adrian..."
He leaned into my touch, closing his eyes, letting out a ragged breath as if my touch was the only thing keeping him anchored to the earth.
"Let me fight for you, Claire," he begged quietly. "Just stand behind me, and let me protect our family."

Looking down at the man who was ready to wage war against the world for our unborn child, the last walls around my wounded heart began to crack.
"Okay," I whispered. "Show them the truth."
