Chapter 5 - The Gala of Whispers and Knives

The grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Museum was bathed in amber light, glittering with crystal chandeliers and filled with the elite of Manhattan high society. Diamonds sparkled against designer gowns, champagne flowed like water, and beneath the refined laughter lay the vicious gossip of the city’s most powerful families.

I wore an emerald green silk maternity gown that flattered my figure, gracefully framing my sixteen-week baby bump. My hair was swept into an elegant updo, and around my neck was a simple gold pendant—not the Moretti family diamonds, but a piece I had bought myself.

I walked into the modern art pavilion accompanied by my design team, checking the final lighting on the installations. But the moment Adrian entered the room, every conversation ceased.

He didn't mingle. He didn't smile. He walked straight through the parted crowd toward me, his presence dominating the entire gallery.

"You look breathtaking," he murmured, his gaze sweeping over me with an intensity that made the surrounding guests whisper furiously.

"Keep your distance, Adrian," I said under my breath, adjusting a framed canvas. "People are staring."

"Let them stare," he said calmly, coming to stand less than an arm's length away. "I want every camera in this room to see that I am standing right where I belong."

Before I could retort, a theatrical gasp echoed from the entrance of the pavilion.

Vanessa Russo stood in the doorway, supported by a cane, wearing a dramatic silver gown that emphasized her fragile frame. Her makeup was expertly applied to make her appear pale and delicate, the tragic victim of unrequited love.

"Adrian?" Vanessa called out, her voice trembling just loud enough for the gathered socialites to hear. "What is she doing here? After everything that happened... how can you let her bring another man's bastard into our circle?"

A collective hush fell over the room. Several society reporters discreetly pulled out their recording devices.

My heart hammered in my throat. The insult was designed to humiliate me in front of the entire industry. I opened my mouth to defend myself, but before I could utter a word, Adrian took two deliberate steps, placing himself directly in front of me like an impenetrable shield.

His voice cut through the silence like a razor blade.

"Choose your next words with extreme care, Vanessa," Adrian said, his tone chillingly flat. "Because they will determine whether you spend the rest of your life in a private facility or behind bars."

Vanessa's delicate facade wavered. "Adrian, darling... I'm only thinking of your reputation! She divorced you two months ago and now she’s showing off a pregnancy—"

"That child," Adrian interrupted, his voice booming across the grand gallery so that every single guest heard every syllable, "is my child. My blood. My heir. And the woman carrying that child is Claire Bennett, the only woman I have ever loved, and the only woman who will ever hold my name."

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

Vanessa’s face contorted in rage. "You're lying! You divorced her! You chose to take care of me!"

"I fulfilled a legal obligation to your deceased father," Adrian said, pulling a folded legal document from his breast pocket and tossing it at Vanessa's feet. "And as of four o'clock this afternoon, that obligation is terminated. I have bought out every asset in the Russo trust, transferred your medical care to an independent board, and filed a restraining order against you for corporate extortion."

Vanessa stared at the papers on the polished marble floor, her face turning crimson with humiliation. "Adrian, please—"

"Leave," Adrian said simply. "Before my security removes you."

Security guards immediately escorted Vanessa out of the hall as the elite crowd watched in stunned silence.

Adrian turned back to me. In front of three hundred elite guests, cameras flashing in the distance, the ruthless billionaire reached out and gently rested his palm over my rounded belly.

His eyes were filled with an emotion I had never seen in him before: complete, unconditional surrender.

"You and our baby," he whispered against my ear, "are my only family. And I will never let anyone dishonor you again."
