Chapter 13 - The Midnight Storm in Manhattan

By late February, New York was hit by the worst blizzard in a decade.

A massive nor'easter dumped three feet of snow across Manhattan within twelve hours, paralyzing transit, grounding emergency helicopters, and turning the city streets into impassable white canyons.

I was thirty-seven weeks pregnant.

Around 2:00 AM, while the wind howled violently against the penthouse glass, a sharp, undeniable pain seized my lower abdomen, followed immediately by a sudden gush of warm fluid.

My water had broken.

"Adrian!" I gasped, clutching the mattress as a powerful contraction ripped through my body.

Adrian was awake instantly. Within seconds, his hands were on my shoulders, his voice calm and focused. "I'm here. Breathe, Claire. Deep breaths."

He immediately dialed our private obstetrician and the emergency services. But after two minutes on the phone, his jaw tightened.

"The roads are completely blocked," Adrian said, hanging up the phone, his face pale but composed. "The ambulance is stuck six blocks away in a snowdrift. The National Guard is attempting to clear the avenue, but it will take at least two hours."

Another violent contraction hit me, harder and faster than the first. I cried out, digging my fingernails into Adrian’s forearm.

"Adrian... the baby... she's coming now!" I sobbed in panic. "I can't wait two hours!"

For a fraction of a second, raw fear flashed across Adrian's eyes. But then his iron resolve snapped into place. He was the man who never backed down from a crisis, and tonight, he would be everything his family needed.

"Marco!" Adrian shouted through the intercom. "Bring all the sterile medical kits from the guest clinic! Boil clean water and get our obstetrician on video link right now!"

Within minutes, the master bedroom was transformed into a delivery room. With the obstetrician guiding him via high-definition video and Marco standing by the door with emergency supplies, Adrian rolled up his sleeves, washed his hands with surgical disinfectant, and knelt between my knees at the foot of our bed.

"Look at me, Claire," Adrian said, his voice a steady, unbreakable anchor in the storm. "You are the strongest woman I have ever known. You can do this. I am right here with you, and I am not going anywhere."

"I'm scared, Adrian!" I wept, trembling with exhaustion and pain.

"I know, my love. But our daughter is ready to meet us," he whispered, kissing my knee, his eyes blazing with fierce love and encouragement. "Push when the next wave hits. Push for our baby girl."

The contraction crested like a tidal wave. I screamed, bearing down with everything I had left, gripping the sheets as Adrian guided me through every breath, every second of agony.

"I see her head, Claire! You're doing it! One more push, sweetheart! Just one more!"

With a final, desperate cry of pure effort, I pushed with every fiber of my being.

And then, above the roar of the howling blizzard outside the glass, a sharp, loud, beautiful cry pierced the room.
