Chapter 7 - Whispers in the Dark and the Unforgivable Touch

The grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Museum buzzed with frantic whispers as Enzo Vitali was dragged away in federal custody. The string quartet resumed playing a slow, haunting waltz, trying desperately to mask the scandal that had just exploded in high society.
Matteo led Lena to the center of the dance floor beneath the towering Roman statues.
He placed one large, warm hand firmly on the curve of her waist, drawing her flush against his chest, while his other hand clasped her slender fingers. Lena gasped softly at the sudden closeness. Her heart slammed against her ribs—not from terror, but from an overwhelming electric current that shot straight down her spine.
"Relax, Lena," Matteo murmured, his deep voice vibrating against her ear. "Follow my lead."
"I don't know how to waltz, Matteo," she whispered, breathless, her eyes locked on the sharp, mesmerizing contours of his face.
"You don't need to know how to dance," he said, guiding her with effortless, powerful grace across the polished floor. "You survived the Vitalis. You survived four years of hell. This is easy."
As they moved across the floor, Lena felt the eyes of every billionaire, politician, and socialite burning into them. But the world seemed to fade into a blur of golden light and distant music. There was only Matteo—the steady warmth of his body, the intoxicating scent of cedar and rain, and the fierce intensity of his dark eyes.
"Why did you put your grandmother's necklace on me tonight?" Lena asked softly. "Everyone in this room thinks I'm your fiancée."
Matteo spun her gently, pulling her back against his chest with breathtaking precision. "Let them think whatever they want. In this city, perception is power. Wearing that sapphire tells the world that harming you is a death sentence."
"Is that the only reason?" she challenged, her voice trembling slightly.
Matteo’s gaze darkened with a raw, primal emotion he had kept locked away behind his cold syndicate mask. "No," he admitted, his voice barely a whisper. "The first time I saw you kneeling on that floor, covered in wine, with your chin held high and your eyes refusing to beg... I knew you were stronger than every coward in that room. You don't belong in the background, Lena. You belong right here."
Lena’s breath caught. Before she could answer, Matteo lowered his head by a fraction of an inch, his lips hovering mere millimeters from hers. The tension between them was unbearable, a spark waiting to ignite a wildfire.
Suddenly, Gianni’s voice crackled through the microscopic earpiece in Matteo’s ear.
“Boss. We have a problem. An unmarked van just breached the security grid near the penthouse. Carmine Vitali is making a desperate move.”
Matteo’s body instantly shifted from tender protector to lethal predator. He pulled back slightly, his jaw tightening into iron.

"What is it?" Lena asked, sensing the sudden chill.
"Carmine is cornered," Matteo said, taking her hand and swiftly leading her toward the private exit. "He knows he’s lost the war. He’s going after Maya."
