Chapter 14 - A Promise Carved Beneath the Winter Snow

That evening, the first winter snow of December began to fall gently over Central Park, dusting the ancient oak trees in a quiet blanket of silver.

Matteo had reserved the entire Central Park Conservatory for a private winter walk. Lanterns glowed warmly along the winding stone paths, casting golden light over the frozen pond.

Lena walked beside him, wrapped in a lavish white fur coat that Matteo had custom-ordered from Milan. Her fingers were interlaced with his, their breaths rising together in the crisp night air.

They stopped on the iconic stone bridge overlooking the glowing skyline of Manhattan.

"One year ago tonight," Lena said softly, watching the snowflakes dance in the golden lamplight. "I was on my knees in that dining room, terrified that my life was over."

Matteo turned to face her, taking both of her gloved hands into his own.

"One year ago tonight," Matteo said, his voice raw with profound emotion, "I was an empty man living in a castle of blood and stone. I had power, money, and an army of men who feared me. But I had nothing worth living for."

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a velvet box.

Lena’s breath hitched. Her heart began to race with overwhelming joy.

Matteo opened the box, revealing a flawless, five-carat emerald-cut diamond ring flanked by two deep blue sapphires—representing Clara and Maya, bound forever to his protection.

Matteo Duca—the man who made senators tremble, the man who had never knelt before any king, judge, or syndicate—slowly, reverently lowered himself onto one knee in the white snow.

Tears welled in Lena’s eyes, shining like diamonds in the moonlight.

"Lena Carter," Matteo spoke, his deep voice carrying the solemn weight of an eternal vow. "You saved my life in that ballroom. You brought light into my darkness, and you taught me what it truly means to be brave. I don't want an alliance. I don't want a treaty. I want you. For the rest of my days, I swear to protect you, honor you, and love you with everything I am."

He looked up into her radiant face. "Will you do me the greatest honor of my life and become my wife?"

Lena covered her mouth as tears of pure happiness spilled down her cheeks. She dropped to her knees in the snow beside him, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder.

"Yes," Lena sobbed with pure joy. "Yes, Matteo! A thousand times yes!"

Matteo lifted her into his arms, spinning her beneath the falling snow as their lips met in a passionate, unforgettable kiss that sealed their souls together forever.
