Chapter 11 - Unmasking the Devil Who Murdered Clara

The warehouse went dead silent except for the drumming of rain against the shattered roof and Maya’s soft sobs.

Duca soldiers swiftly secured the perimeter, bagging the weapons and disarming the two surviving guards. Maria, the housekeeper, was untied from a nearby storage room, completely unharmed, and rushed forward to take Maya into her arms.

"Take Maya and Maria to the armored transport," Lena commanded softly, kissing Maya’s wet cheeks. "I'll be right there, baby. Auntie just needs one more minute."

Maya nodded bravely, clinging to Maria as the guards escorted them out into the safety of the rain.

Lena turned around.

Lying on the concrete, clutching her bleeding shoulder and weeping in agony, was Alisandre Vitali. Her expensive makeup was smeared with tears, sweat, and dirt.

Matteo walked over, standing beside Lena like a dark monolith of judgment. He handed Lena an audio recorder linked to the federal prosecutor's encrypted line.

"She has two minutes before the FBI convoy arrives to take her into federal custody," Matteo said quietly. "Make her talk."

Lena walked over and stopped above Alisandre. The heiress looked up, shivering with terror, looking at the former hotel maid who now held her entire existence in her hands.

"You won..." Alisandre choked out, spitting blood onto her designer coat. "You took everything from me. My fiancé... my family... my fortune."

"You destroyed your own life, Alisandre," Lena said, her voice steady, cold, and razor-sharp. "Now tell me the truth about Clara. Tell the recorder what you and Enzo did five years ago in Room 1402."

Alisandre let out a bitter, broken laugh. "Enzo... Enzo was laundering twenty million a month through the Balario. Your stupid, self-righteous sister found the ledgers on his laptop while cleaning his suite. She threatened to go to the DA."

"And what did you do?" Lena pressed, her knuckles turning white around the recorder.

"I told Enzo to handle it," Alisandre sobbed, her eyes wild with defeated spite. "Enzo had two of our enforcers drug her, drag her to the sixth floor, and toss her over the railing to make it look like a suicide. I paid the chief coroner fifty thousand dollars to sign the accidental death report. There! Are you happy? You have your confession!"

Lena clicked the STOP button on the recorder.

In the distance, sirens wailed through the Brooklyn fog. Dozens of federal police cruisers, FBI tactical units, and ambulances swarmed into the shipyard, their red and blue lights painting the dark warehouse in flashing crimson.

Lena looked down at the woman who had sneered at her four days ago, who had called her 'just the help' and stepped on her fingers.

"I'm not happy, Alisandre," Lena said softly, turning her back on the fallen heiress. "I'm just finally done with you."

As the FBI stormed the warehouse and dragged Alisandre Vitali away in chains, Matteo stepped up beside Lena, slipping his heavy, warm coat around her shoulders once again.

Lena leaned against his chest, exhausted, bruised, and victorious, letting the tears of five years of grief wash away in his embrace.
