Chapter 3 - Stepping into the Lion's Den of Glass and Steel

The interior of the Maybach was warm, quiet, and insulated from the violence of the outside world. The scent of leather and cedar filled the air as the heavy doors slammed shut with an airtight seal.
Lena sat in the back corner, her body trembling uncontrollably as she clutched Maya tightly against her chest. Maya was wide-eyed, her little hands buried in the soft cashmere of Matteo's coat.
Matteo sat across from them on the rear-facing leather seat. He holstered his weapon into a custom leather harness beneath his jacket and tapped on the glass partition. "Drive, Gianni. Secure perimeter. No tails."
"Yes, Boss," the driver responded, and the heavy vehicle surged forward smoothly into the Manhattan night.
Matteo turned his gaze toward Lena. He didn't speak immediately. His dark, piercing eyes inspected her from head to toe, noting the scraped skin on her ankle, the soaked strands of dark hair plastered to her cheeks, and the fierce, motherly grip she had on the little girl.
"Are you hurt?" Matteo asked. His voice was lower now, stripped of the public arrogance he displayed in the hotel ballroom.
"My ankle... it's just twisted," Lena managed to whisper, her throat raw. She looked at the man who had just executed a hitman without blinking. "Who were those men? Were they... Alisandre's?"
"Alisandre’s brother, Enzo Vitali," Matteo replied coldly. "The Vitali family realized the poison failed the moment you walked out of that dining room with my coat. They knew I wouldn't let you leave that room unless you held information that could bury them. They wanted you dead before you could give me a formal deposition."
Maya peeked out from behind Lena’s arm. "Mister? Are you a superhero or a bad guy?"
Lena’s heart leaped into her throat. "Maya, shh!"
Matteo looked down at the little girl. A rare, almost imperceptible curve touched the corner of his lips—not quite a smile, but something far more human than Lena expected from a syndicate king.
"Neither, little one," Matteo said softly. "I'm the guy who makes sure the bad guys don't bother you ever again."
Maya tilted her head, considering his answer. "I like your coat. It's soft."
"It looks better on your aunt," Matteo said quietly, his eyes lifting back to Lena’s face.
The intensity of his gaze made Lena's breath hitch. There was no mockery in his expression, no condescending smirk like the ones she endured daily from hotel patrons. He was looking at her as an equal—or perhaps something even more dangerous.
Thirty minutes later, the Maybach descended into a private subterranean garage beneath a towering skyscraper overlooking the East River: The Duca Penthouse Tower.
Security guards armed with automatic rifles stood at every corner, snapping to attention and bowing their heads as Matteo led Lena and Maya toward a private biometric elevator.
The elevator shot up seventy floors in near silence before opening into a breathtaking two-story penthouse of black marble, walnut paneling, and panoramic glass walls overlooking the glowing Manhattan skyline.
"This is your home now," Matteo stated, walking over to a crystal decanter on the bar.
"We can't stay here," Lena said quickly, panic flaring in her chest. "Mr. Duca, I am grateful that you saved our lives, but we don't belong in your world. I'm a hotel maid. I make eighteen dollars an hour. I just need to get Maya to my aunt in Pennsylvania—"
"If you set foot in Pennsylvania, the Vitalis will find you in forty-eight hours and put two bullets in your skull," Matteo cut in, his voice hardening like steel. He poured two fingers of amber whiskey and turned to face her. "You saw the capsule. You know Alisandre tried to poison me. You are the only living civilian witness whose testimony gives me the legal and syndicate right to annihilate the Vitali family without triggering an all-out civil war with the Commission."
Lena set Maya down on a plush sofa and stepped toward him, her anger overcoming her fear. "So I'm just a weapon to you? A pawn in your mob war?"
Matteo walked toward her until he was standing barely a foot away. The sheer presence of him was overwhelming. "If you were just a pawn to me, Lena Carter, I would have locked you in a safehouse basement with three guards. I brought you to my personal residence. I gave you my coat. Do you know what that means in my world?"
"No," she whispered, her voice faltering under his intense stare. "What does it mean?"
"It means anyone who touches a single hair on your head has declared war on Matteo Duca," he said, his tone deadly and absolute. "It means from tonight onward, you are under my personal protection. No one touches you. No one insults you. And no one makes you kneel ever again."

Lena stared at him, her chest heaving, the warmth of his words clashing with the cold reality of who he was.
"Now," Matteo continued, gesturing toward a door down the grand hallway. "There is a guest suite with a warm bath and fresh clothes. My personal physician is on his way to check your ankle. Rest, Lena. Tomorrow morning, we burn the Vitali family to the ground."
