Chapter 13 - Toby’s Heart and the Vigil in the Midnight Room

Tuesday morning arrived with brilliant, golden sunlight streaming through the windows of St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

The pediatric cardiology surgical unit was prepared. Toby lay on the rolling gurney, wearing a tiny surgical cap, holding Josie’s hand tightly with both of his small fingers.

Dr. Ogden stood by the operating room double doors, his surgical scrubs on, smiling reassuringly at Josie. "It's time, Josie."

Josie leaned down, kissing Toby’s forehead, her tears falling onto his cheeks. "I love you more than all the stars in the sky, Toby. Be brave for mommy."

"I'm brave, Mom," Toby whispered, his voice slightly drowsy from the pre-op sedative. He looked past her to Dominic, who stood tall and resolute at Josie’s side. "Mr. Dominic... will you make sure we get the ice cream when I wake up?"

Dominic stepped forward, gently resting his hand on the boy's small shoulder. "I bought the entire ice cream factory this morning, Toby. It will be waiting for you when you open your eyes."

Toby smiled, closed his eyes, and the surgical team wheeled the gurney through the double doors into the operating theater.

The red surgical light illuminated above the doors: SURGERY IN PROGRESS.

What followed was the longest, most agonizing six hours of Josie Whitaker’s life.

She sat in the private waiting room, her body trembling with exhaustion and overwhelming terror. Every passing minute felt like an eternity. Mrs. Hattie sat beside her, softly reciting prayers while clutching her rosary beads.

Dominic never left Josie’s side for a single second.

He dismissed his assistants, canceled every corporate meeting, and sat beside her on the narrow sofa. When Josie’s strength finally broke and she began to sob uncontrollably into her hands, Dominic pulled her into his lap, wrapping his massive arms around her, pressing her head against his chest so she could hear the strong, steady beating of his heart.

"I have you, Josephine," Dominic whispered into her hair, rocking her gently. "He is going to make it. Have faith."

For six hours, the feared mafia kingpin held the impoverished single mother in his arms, providing an unbreakable fortress of warmth and safety against the terrifying silence of the hospital.

At 2:45 PM, the surgical doors swung open.

Dr. Ogden walked out, pulling down his surgical mask. He looked exhausted, but his eyes were shining with triumph.

Josie leaped to her feet, her breath trapped in her throat, Dominic standing right beside her, holding her hand.

"Doctor...?" Josie gasped.

Dr. Ogden broke into a broad, radiant smile. "The valve reconstruction was a flawless success. His heart rhythm normalized the second we restored blood flow. Toby is in the recovery suite right now, breathing entirely on his own."

Josie collapsed against Dominic’s chest, weeping tears of pure, unbridled joy. Dominic caught her, lifting her in his arms, his own eyes glistening with rare, profound emotion as he pressed his forehead against hers.

"He made it, Josephine," Dominic breathed, his voice thick with joy. "Your boy is saved."
