Chapter 7 - THE WAR ROOM BEHIND THE COUNTER

Matteo arrived at the diner at noon.

He took one look at the manila envelope on the back counter and his expression hardened into stone.

“They’re moving too fast,” Matteo muttered, pacing the narrow space between the stove and the sink.

“They want to rattle us,” Lena said, opening the photographs one by one.

“They want a reaction.”

“They’ll get one,” Matteo reached for his car keys.

“Where are you going?”

“To see an old contact.”

“Matteo, no.” Lena stepped in front of him, blocking the exit.

“Walking into their trap won't solve anything.”

“Staying here makes us sitting ducks.”

“We’re not sitting ducks,” Lena’s eyes flashed with fierce resolve.

“You taught me how to survive in Brooklyn.”

“Now let me help you finish this.”

Matteo stared at her for a long, intense moment.

He saw the same fire that had made him fall in love with her in the blood-soaked alley three years ago.

“If we do this,” Matteo said quietly, cupping her cheek with his calloused hand.

“There’s no going back to ordinary.”

“Ordinary was nice,” Lena smiled faintly.

“But survival is better.”
