Chapter 13 - THE FINAL PLUNGE

With Sal bleeding out on the floor, Dante turned his gun toward Lena.
“If I’m going down,” Dante snarled, his eyes wild with madness.
“I’m taking your wife with me!”
He pulled the trigger!
Lena moved instantly, diving behind the heavy mahogany desk as the bullet splintered the wood.
Matteo didn't hesitate.
He vaulted across the desk like a striking panther, tackling Dante squarely in the chest.
Both men crashed through the floor-to-ceiling glass window!
Shattered crystal rained down like a waterfall of diamonds toward the street twenty stories below.
Lena screamed, lunging to the window edge.
“Matteo!”
Down in the darkness, hanging onto the exterior steel window-washing cradle, Matteo held on with one hand.
With his other hand, he gripped Dante by the collar of his suit jacket.
Dante dangled over the abyss, suspended entirely by Matteo’s grip against the howling wind and rain.
“Pull me up, Matteo!” Dante screamed in terror.
“Help me!”
Matteo looked down into the eyes of the man who had tried to destroy his life.
“You should have stayed out of Route 17,” Matteo said quietly.

He opened his fingers.
Dante plummeted into the rainy abyss, disappearing into the flashing red lights of the police cruisers far below.
