Chapter 14 - THE SIRENS FADE AWAY

Heavy boots echoed up the penthouse stairs.

Federal agents and local police kicked the double doors open, guns drawn.

“Freeze! Put your hands where we can see them!” an agent shouted.

Lena stepped out from behind the desk, her hands raised slightly, holding her badge.

Wait.

Not a badge.

An encrypted federal clearance card issued three years ago when Matteo agreed to dismantle the syndicate from the inside.

She handed it to the lead agent.

The agent looked at the card, then at Lena, and immediately lowered his weapon.

“Agent Vance,” the officer nodded respectfully.

“Is the target secured?”

“Dante Moretti is gone,” Lena said calmly, looking out the shattered window toward the quiet horizon.

“And his empire with him.”

Downstairs, the chaos slowly quieted down.

Salatore was placed in cuffs by medical personnel.

The federal raid had completely dismantled the remaining leadership of the northern cartel.

Lena walked back to the elevator, her steps light, her heart finally at peace.

Matteo stepped out of the emergency stairwell on the tenth floor, drenched in rain, breathing heavily, but entirely alive.

Their eyes met across the corridor.

No words were needed.

They had survived the fire once more.
