Dante choked for air, his face turning purple in the dark.
“You... you think I’m working alone?” Dante gasped out a broken laugh.
“Check... check your back, Matteo.”
Suddenly, the penthouse doors swung open wide.
Emergency red backup lights clicked on, casting a bloody glow across the room.
Standing in the doorway wasn't an enemy.
It was Salatore.
Holding a shotgun pointed directly at Matteo’s chest.
Matteo froze.
Lena whipped her pistol around, aiming straight at Sal.
“Drop it, Sal,” Lena ordered, her voice like cracked ice.
Salatore smiled sadly, shaking his head.
“I’m sorry, kid,” Sal looked at Matteo.
“Dante offered me the entire Brooklyn shipping port.”
“Loyalty died twenty years ago.”
“You should have stayed retired.”
Dante shoved Matteo off the desk, coughing violently, and picked up his dropped pistol.

“Good dog, Sal,” Dante panted, wiping blood from his lip.
“Now, kill them both.”
