Chapter 6 - A Palace Fit for a Queen

Thirty minutes later, the Maybach turned off the main highway and entered a private, gated estate perched high on the cliffs overlooking Long Island Sound. Iron gates emblazoned with the Mercer crest parted silently, leading us up a winding driveway lined with illuminated oak trees.

Julian’s private residence was a masterpiece of modern architecture—soaring glass walls, warm limestone, and expansive terraces offering breathtaking views of the dark, shimmering ocean below.

As we stepped inside the grand foyer, a crackling limestone fireplace immediately filled the space with warmth. The house was peaceful, elegant, and entirely devoid of the suffocating tension that had poisoned my parents' home.

"Mrs. Gable," Julian called out gently to his head housekeeper, who emerged from the dining wing with a warm, welcoming smile.

"Good evening, Mr. Mercer. Welcome home, Miss Claire," Mrs. Gable greeted us warmly. "I have dinner prepared just as you requested."

Julian turned to me, removing his heavy overcoat. "I knew you wouldn't get a chance to eat a single bite back there. Mrs. Gable prepared a private Thanksgiving dinner for just the two of us."

We walked into the intimate dining room overlooking the water. On the table sat a beautiful spread of roasted herb chicken, buttery mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus, and freshly baked cranberry tarts. There were no dirty pans to scrub, no demands barked across the counter, and no insults disguised as family banter.

Julian pulled out my chair, waiting until I was comfortably seated before taking his place across from me. He poured two glasses of vintage sparkling cider, raising his glass with a warm smile.

"To new beginnings," Julian said softly. "And to the woman who survived the fire and emerged stronger than anyone I know."

We clinked our glasses together. As I took my first bite of warm food, the tension in my shoulders finally uncoiled.

"Why did you do it, Julian?" I asked quietly between bites. "You could have any woman in the world. Heiresses, models, brilliant executives. Why choose someone who came with so much family baggage and an empty bank account?"

Julian set his glass down, his grey eyes locking onto mine with absolute sincerity. "Because those heiresses and socialites haven't lived a day of real life, Claire. When I met you at that community center, you were spending your only free evening helping young girls learn how to budget and build their credit so they wouldn't end up trapped by predatory lenders. You were working two jobs, exhausted, yet your eyes were full of kindness and determination."

He reached across the table, covering my hand with his. "You didn't care about my net worth. When I asked you out for coffee the first time, you insisted on splitting the four-dollar bill. You have a soul made of pure gold, Claire. Your family couldn't see your value because they are blinded by their own greed. But I see you. And I will spend the rest of my life making sure the world sees you too."

That night, for the first time in seven long years, I fell asleep in a soft, silk-lined bed, listening to the gentle crash of the waves below, knowing that my nightmare was finally over.
