Chapter 15 - The Golden Horizon

On a radiant Saturday afternoon in June, the private chapel overlooking the ocean at Julian’s estate was filled with white roses, gentle harp music, and two hundred of our closest friends, colleagues, and well-wishers.
My father, Thomas Bennett, sat quietly in the fourth row beside my mother. True to my word, they were invited. They were dressed modestly, keeping their heads down, watching with tear-filled eyes as the daughter they had once cast aside prepared to marry the love of her life.
Ryan was not in attendance; he had chosen to spend his weekend working overtime at his logistics desk in Queens, finally taking the first steps toward earning real self-respect.
When the heavy wooden doors of the chapel swung open, the entire congregation stood up.
I didn't have my father walk me down the aisle. I chose to walk alone—a symbol of the strength that had carried me through the darkest nights of my life.
I wore an ivory lace gown with a cathedral-length veil trailing behind me like a cloud of starlight. Every step I took along the white carpet was a testament to survival, resilience, and unshakeable dignity.
At the altar stood Julian Mercer.
His eyes glistened with unshed tears as he watched me approach. When I reached the top of the altar steps, he extended his hand, and I placed mine inside it—the exact same hand he had kissed in that greasy, smoky kitchen seven months ago when he had changed my destiny forever.
"You look stunning, my love," Julian whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
The officiant smiled, raising his hands to begin the ceremony.
"We are gathered here today to unite two extraordinary souls in holy matrimony..."
When the moment came to exchange our vows, Julian looked deep into my eyes, speaking from the depths of his heart without reading from any script.
"Claire," Julian said, his voice ringing clearly across the chapel. "On the day I met you, you taught me that true wealth is not measured in bank accounts or acquisitions, but in the strength of one's spirit and the purity of one's heart. You survived the storm without losing your kindness. I promise to honor you, protect you, stand by you as an equal partner, and love you fiercely until my very last breath."
Tears of pure happiness spilled down my cheeks as I held his hands.
"Julian," I replied, my voice steady and filled with profound love. "When the entire world made me feel invisible, you saw me. When I was trapped in darkness, you gave me the courage to step into the light. You are my partner, my best friend, and my safe harbor. I give you my whole heart, today and for all the days of our lives."
"By the power vested in me," the officiant declared, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Julian, you may kiss your bride."
Julian wrapped his arms around me, pulling me close and lifting me slightly off my feet as he captured my lips in a passionate, breathtaking kiss.
The chapel erupted into thunderous cheers and applause. Rose petals rained down around us as we turned to face the world as husband and wife.
