Chapter 6 - Marked by the Syndicate and the Fortress of Midnight

By 4:00 AM, the underworld was on fire.

Victor Vance had officially broken away from the Marcel syndicate, consolidating his rogue captains across the five boroughs. Safe houses were burning in Queens; two cargo freighters at the Red Hook terminal were seized by armed mercenaries, and the price on Mara’s head was set at twenty-five million dollars in untraceable cryptocurrency.

Dante refused to allow Mara out of his sight.

Her cramped Bronx apartment was raided by Vance’s hit squad at 3:15 AM—a hit squad that found the apartment empty, thanks to a tactical extraction team Dante had dispatched within ten minutes of the ballroom explosion. Mara’s mother had already been relocated via private medical helicopter to an undisclosed, fortress-level hospital facility in the Adirondacks, secured by Dante’s most loyal private operators.

Mara stood in the master suite bathroom of the penthouse.

The plain uniform was gone. On the marble counter lay a tailored charcoal-gray cashmere sweater, bespoke dark slacks, and handmade Italian leather boots—procured within hours by Dante’s personal stylists.

Mara looked at herself in the grand vanity mirror.

She let down her tight, severe hair. The rich chestnut waves cascaded past her shoulders. Without the dowdy uniform and the deliberate slouch of an invisible servant, her true posture emerged: tall, elegant, with fierce, intelligent eyes and a face sculpted with quiet, aristocratic beauty that Sienna Vale could never duplicate.

She slid the billion-dollar diamond ring onto her left finger. It fit with impossible perfection.

The door clicked open. Dante stepped inside.

He paused in the doorway. His gaze traveled slowly from the boots, up the curve of her hips, across the soft gray cashmere, to her open hair and striking face. For a fleeting second, the ruthless mafia warlord looked completely disarmed.

"You spent three years hiding under my nose," Dante said, his voice husky and dark.

"Invisibility was survival, Dante," she said, using his first name for the first time.

Dante walked toward her, closing the distance until the heat radiating from his chest warmed the air between them. He reached behind her neck, lifting a strand of her hair, his fingers lingering against her skin.

"Survival is over, Mara," Dante murmured, his eyes burning into hers. "Now we take the empire."

Before Mara could answer, Roman’s voice barked through Dante’s encrypted earpiece.

"Boss! We have a breach at the lower perimeter. Vance’s heavy assault team just blew the main gate at the Brooklyn armory. They're coming for the mainframe."

Dante didn't break eye contact with Mara. His jaw locked into hard, granite lines.

"Get your coat, Mara," Dante whispered, a lethal grin spreading across his face. "Let’s go show your uncle why he should have stayed in the shadows."
