Chapter 13 - The Rebuilding of an Empire

One month later.

The city of New York was calm, under the absolute, undisputed control of the Marcel syndicate.

The Vale empire had collapsed into federal bankruptcy; Julian and Sienna Vale were sentenced to twenty-five years in federal penitentiaries for high-level wire fraud, treason, and attempted murder.

The penthouse on the 60th floor had been completely remodeled.

The dark, cold shadows were replaced with warm Italian marble, vibrant modern art, and expansive floor-to-ceiling libraries curated by Mara herself.

Mara’s mother was settled into a luxurious private estate in Westchester, fully recovered, surrounded by gardens and round-the-clock medical care.

Mara stood on the master terrace overlooking Central Park, the spring breeze catching the hem of her white cashmere robe.

Arms wrapped around her from behind. Dante pulled her back against his broad chest, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"What are you thinking about?" Dante murmured, kissing the sensitive curve of her neck.

"Three years ago, I was sweeping this exact terrace," Mara smiled softly, leaning back into his warmth. "Wondering if I’d have enough money for groceries on Friday."

"And now?"

Mara turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck, the billion-dollar diamond ring sparkling brilliantly in the midday sun.

"And now I have the world," she whispered.

"Not just the world," Dante smiled, his gray eyes filled with endless, devoted love. "You have me."
