Chapter 5 - The Kingpin’s Private Sanctum and the Interrogation of a Ghost

The grand ballroom was cleared within twenty minutes.

Julian Vale and Carver were dragged down to the soundproofed sub-basement by Roman’s extraction team. The high-society guests were escorted to private elevators under strict armed guard, their phones confiscated and their bank accounts placed under shadow surveillance. Sienna Vale had been thrown into a private town car in hysterical ruins, her family's empire crumbling before the midnight news could even print the morning headlines.

Mara stood in the center of Dante’s private top-floor penthouse study.

The room was vast, lined with thousands of first-edition leather volumes, floor-to-ceiling bulletproof glass, and antique mahogany furniture. A crackling wood fire threw deep amber shadows across the dark Persian rugs.

Mara looked down at her left hand.

The ten-carat pink diamond ring felt impossibly heavy on her knuckle. It was an artifact of absolute power, worth more than three generations of her family’s labor could ever earn.

Dante stood near the bar, pouring two glasses of neat twenty-five-year-old Macallan scotch. He had discarded his tuxedo jacket, unbuttoned his collar, and rolled his crisp white sleeves up to his forearms, revealing dense, intricate black ink—the ancient marks of the Marcel syndicate's founding lineage.

He walked over, holding out a crystal glass to her.

"Drink," Dante said.

Mara hesitated for half a second, then took the glass. The liquid burned down her throat with notes of peat, oak, and dark honey. It settled the cold adrenaline humming in her veins.

"You aren't a housekeeper, Mara," Dante said, his gray eyes pinning her like a specimen under a microscope. "A housekeeper does not identify RDX by sight. A housekeeper does not recognize counter-surveillance tactics, and a housekeeper certainly does not maintain an active threat-assessment log on my household manager."

"I am a housekeeper, Mr. Marcel," Mara said calmly, setting the glass on the corner of his desk. "I was also a legal clerk who spent three years reviewing criminal discovery files for the district attorney’s special narcotics task force before my father died. I know how men like Victor Vance build hit files. And I know how men like Julian Vale bleed money before they resort to murder."

Dante leaned against the edge of the mahogany desk, crossing his arms. A slow, dangerous smile curved the corner of his lips.

"Your real name is Mara Vance," Dante said quietly.

Mara’s pulse spiked for a microsecond, but her expression remained made of stone.

"Victor Vance is your estranged uncle," Dante continued, his voice dropping into that terrifying, intimate register. "He bankrupted your father. He forced your family into the street, watched your mother get sick, and left you to scrub floors while he attempted to seize control of my eastern shipping terminals."

"If you know who I am," Mara said, taking half a step forward, her eyes flashing with cold steel, "then you know I had nothing to do with tonight’s ambush. If I wanted you dead, Mr. Marcel, I wouldn't have thrown a fifty-pound ice bucket into an explosive charge thirty seconds before detonation. I would have taken the service elevator to the street at 9:30 PM."

Dante stared at her for several long, breathless seconds. The silence between them was not the silence of master and servant. It was the silence between two predators recognizing each other in the dark.

"I know," Dante murmured.

He reached out. His fingers, calloused and warm, lightly touched the side of her jaw. Mara stiffened, but she didn't pull away.

"You saved my life tonight, Mara," Dante whispered, his thumb lightly brushing the high arch of her cheekbone. "Sienna was a political contract. An alliance of convenience that was dying before it began. But you... you are something entirely different."

May you like

"What am I, Mr. Marcel?"

"You are the woman who just became the most dangerous person in North America," Dante said softly. "Because tomorrow morning, Victor Vance will realize his niece is wearing the Marcel family ring. And he will burn the city to take it off your dead hand."
