Chapter 8 - The Press Conference That Never Happened

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the news broke across the nation.

Every major news network—CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and the Associated Press—was broadcasting live from the steps of the Harrington County Courthouse. The headlines flashing across the bottom of the screen were staggering:

BREAKING NEWS: MASSIVE FEDERAL SWEEP IN VIRGINIA — COUNTY SHERIFF AND SON CHARGED WITH RACKETEERING, ATTEMPTED MURDER, AND ILLEGAL CHEMICAL DUMPING.

PENTAGON CONFIRMS JOINT TASK FORCE COOPERATION IN DISMANTLING MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR CRIME SYNDICATE.

In the executive briefing room at Walter Reed, I sat beside Colonel Vance and Assistant United States Attorney Eleanor Vance (the Colonel’s sister and one of the sharpest federal prosecutors in the country).

On the television screen, the Harrington County District Attorney—who had spent five years covering up Travis Mercer’s violent assaults—was attempting to hold an impromptu press conference to distance himself from the scandal.

“The District Attorney’s office had no prior knowledge of Sheriff Mercer’s illicit commercial operations…” the man stuttered, wiping sweat from his forehead with a trembling handkerchief.

Before he could finish his sentence, two federal agents stepped onto the podium behind him, placed silver handcuffs around his wrists, and led him away from the microphones in front of twenty screaming reporters.

Eleanor Vance clicked the television remote, turning off the screen.

“The grand jury has returned true bills on all forty-eight counts,” Eleanor said, sliding a thick document across the conference table. “Travis Mercer is looking at thirty-five years to life for aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit murder, and witness tampering. His father, Daniel Mercer, will face federal RICO charges carrying consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.”

“What about the cleanup of the limestone quarry?” I asked.

“The EPA has already seized twelve million dollars from Blue Ridge Holdings’ offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands,” Eleanor replied. “The Superfund division is mobilizing a specialized environmental remediation team to excavate the 14,000 toxic barrels and restore the county’s water table. Every family whose well was contaminated will receive full federal restitution.”

I nodded slowly. The legal machinery was doing its job, grinding the Mercer empire into dust with bureaucratic precision.

I stood up and walked down the quiet corridor to the second-floor orthopedic recovery ward.
