Chapter 11 - The Federal Hammer Descends

Over the next six weeks, the federal trials moved with relentless, crushing momentum.
The federal courthouse in Alexandria became the epicenter of the largest public corruption trial in Virginia history. Over one hundred witnesses testified: defrauded property owners, terrified nurses from County Memorial who had been threatened by Travis, state laboratory technicians who had been bribed to alter water toxicity reports, and federal environmental chemists.
The defense attorneys hired by Daniel Mercer’s high-priced legal team tried every procedural trick in the book:
They filed motions to suppress the flash drive evidence, claiming it was illegally seized. The judge denied the motion within four minutes, citing the plain-view doctrine and military exigency.
They attempted to claim Travis Mercer was suffering from diminished mental capacity. The court-appointed psychiatrist dismantled the claim in twenty pages of devastating clinical analysis, diagnosing him as a calculating, narcissistic sociopath who fully understood the cruelty of his actions.
On the final day of the trial, I wheeled Emily into the courtroom.
Her recovery had been arduous. She had spent five weeks in intensive physical therapy at Walter Reed, undergoing three complex orthopedic surgeries to reconstruct her tibia and fibula with titanium rods and precision bone grafts.
She wore a dark navy-blue suit, her hazel eyes bright and clear, her chin held high.
When she took the witness stand, the entire courtroom fell into dead silence.
For three hours, Emily delivered her testimony with crystal clarity. She detailed every threat, every falsified document, and the exact words Travis Mercer had spoken to her in the darkness behind the quarry before he struck her with the iron pipe.

Travis sat at the defense table, unable to meet her gaze. He stared down at his shackled hands, his face pale and sunken.
When Emily finished speaking, there was not a single person in the gallery who did not understand the absolute righteousness of her cause.
