Chapter 7 - Ambush on Blackwood Bridge

While the federal agents secured the perimeter at the Hayes farm, I boarded the secondary Black Hawk with Colonel Vance. Within four minutes, the aircraft was airborne, banking hard over the misty ridgeline toward Harrington County Memorial Hospital.

From eight hundred feet in the air, the small town looked peaceful—a cluster of amber streetlights nestled between the dark folds of the Blue Ridge Mountains. But beneath those quiet rooftops lay twenty years of institutional decay.

“Blake,” Colonel Vance said through the flight intercom headset. “Agent Reid’s team has already sealed the hospital’s third floor. We have an elite military surgical transport unit standing by at Andrews Air Force Base. Once we get Emily on board, she will receive the finest orthopedic reconstruction surgery the United States military can provide.”

“Thank you, Colonel,” I said, looking out into the gray mist. “What about the rest of Mercer’s network?”

Vance smiled a cold, dangerous smile. “The Department of Justice just unsealed twenty-four indictments. Mercer wasn't working alone. Two state delegates, a circuit judge, and the regional director of the Department of Environmental Quality were on Blue Ridge Holdings’ monthly payroll. By sunrise, there won't be a single corrupt official left sitting behind a desk in this district.”

The helicopter flared its rotor blades and touched down smoothly on the hospital’s rooftop helipad.

The rotor wash flattened the rain against the concrete. I jumped out of the side door, followed by two armed military medics carrying a specialized carbon-fiber transport stretcher.

We took the rooftop stairwell down into the intensive care unit.

The atmosphere in the hospital had transformed completely. The smug off-duty deputies who had been lingering in the corridors earlier were gone—arrested by FBI agents who now stood at every doorway in tactical gear.

In Room 314, Emily was awake.

When she saw me walk through the door, tears broke across her bruised cheeks, but this time, they weren't tears of terror. They were tears of pure, overwhelming relief.

“Blake…” she whispered, reaching out to me.

I knelt beside her bed, burying my face against her neck, holding her fragile hand in mine.

“It’s over, Em,” I whispered against her skin. “The feds have the drive. Daniel Mercer and Travis are in custody. The whole network is falling apart.”

She let out a long, trembling breath, her entire body relaxing for the first time in four months. “My parents…?”

“Safe. The FBI is escorting them to a secure federal facility in northern Virginia as we speak.”

The military flight surgeon stepped forward, checking her monitors and IV lines. “Mrs. Carter, we’re going to administer a mild sedative and transfer you to the helicopter. In forty-five minutes, you’ll be in the specialized trauma suite at Walter Reed. You’re going to walk again, Emily. I promise you that.”

As the medics carefully transferred Emily onto the transport stretcher, I held her hand all the way up to the roof.

The flight to Walter Reed was smooth and quiet. In the dim red light of the Black Hawk’s cabin, Emily slept peacefully under the influence of the medication, her hand never leaving mine.

I looked down at the dark Virginia landscape passing beneath the aircraft.

The battle in the woods was finished. But the legal, financial, and institutional war was just beginning.
