Chapter 6 - The Digital Siege of Harrington County

The sound of twin Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters cutting through a rainstorm is unlike anything else on earth. It is not just noise; it is a physical vibration that rattles the sternum, shakes the teeth in your jaw, and displaces the air with hundreds of pounds of downward pressure.
The two massive black helicopters materialized out of the low cloud base, hovering barely fifty feet above the apple orchard.
Their twin thirty-million-candlepower searchlights snapped on simultaneously, bathing the entire Hayes property in a harsh, blinding stadium-white brilliance that made the dark night vanish in an instant.
Over the helicopter’s high-output tactical loudspeaker system, a thunderous voice boomed across the valley:
“ATTENTION HARRINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S PERSONNEL. THIS IS SPECIAL AGENT MARCUS REID OF THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION AND COLONEL MARCUS VANCE, UNITED STATES ARMY SPECIAL OPERATIONS COMMAND. YOU ARE CURRENTLY INTERFERING WITH A FEDERAL INVESTIGATION UNDER TITLE 18 OF THE UNITED STATES CODE. DROP YOUR WEAPONS, STEP AWAY FROM ALL VEHICLES, AND LIE FACE DOWN IN THE MUD IMMEDIATELY.”
Deputy Nolan dropped his AR-15 so fast it bounced against the BearCat’s tire. He raised both hands high in the air, falling to his knees without being asked twice.
The other two deputies threw their handguns into the bushes and dropped flat onto their stomachs, burying their faces in the wet grass.
Only Sheriff Daniel Mercer remained standing.
His eyes were bloodshot, his silver hair plastered to his forehead by the torrential downpour. He raised his .45 Colt toward the sky, pointing the barrel directly at the cockpit of the lead Black Hawk.
“This is my county!” Mercer screamed at the top of his lungs, his voice cracked with mad defiance. “The state gave me this jurisdiction! You have no authority here! Get off my mountain!”
From the side door of the lead Black Hawk, four fast-ropes dropped into the mud.
Eight operators from the FBI Hostage Rescue Team, clad in full multicam tactical gear, dropped smoothly down the ropes, their suppressed HK416 carbines raised, laser aiming modules projecting solid green beams directly onto Daniel Mercer’s chest.
I stepped out from the shadows of the apple trees, walking calmly toward the light.
Sheriff Mercer saw me first.
His eyes widened in a mixture of disbelief, hatred, and absolute realization. He lowered his pistol from the helicopter and turned the barrel directly toward my forehead.
“You…” Mercer snarled, his finger tightening on the trigger. “You destroyed twenty years of work in one night…”
Before his finger could finish the trigger pull, a single, suppressed precision rifle shot cracked from the open door of the hovering helicopter.
The high-velocity round struck Mercer’s right wrist with surgical accuracy.
The .45 Colt exploded out of his hand, spinning through the air and splashing into the mud. Mercer let out a high-pitched scream of agony, clutching his shattered wrist as he collapsed to his knees.
Four HRT operators moved in with blinding speed. They pinned Mercer to the ground, placed heavy zip-ties around his wrists and ankles, and disarmed Travis, dragging him screaming from the interior of the BearCat.
Special Agent Marcus Reid—a tall, sharp-featured federal investigator in a Kevlar vest with FBI gold lettering—walked over to me, holding a secure evidence briefcase.
“Blake Carter?” Reid asked, extending a gloved hand.
“Yes, sir.”
“Your signals officer, Captain Lin, transferred twelve gigabytes of encrypted files directly to the Director’s desk twenty minutes ago,” Reid said, his voice brimming with respect. “We’ve already executed concurrent federal search warrants at Mercer’s personal residence, the County Courthouse, and the Apex Chemical distribution terminal in Norfolk. We found two million in cash in Mercer’s basement safe and forty-two illegal weapons.”
Reid looked down at Daniel Mercer, who was spitting mud and cursing from the ground.
“Sheriff Mercer,” Reid said dryly. “You are under arrest for federal racketeering, environmental terrorism, conspiracy to commit murder, and deprivation of civil rights under color of law. You’ll be spending the rest of your life in ADX Florence.”
Colonel Vance stepped off the second helicopter, wearing a flight jacket, his hard eyes scanning the perimeter before stopping on me.
He walked over, looked at the mud on my boots, and placed a heavy hand on my shoulder.
“How is Emily, Blake?” Vance asked, his voice softening.
“She’s at County Memorial, Colonel. Both legs are pinned. But she’s alive.”
Vance turned toward the lead pilot. “Get the medevac team on the secondary bird. We are flying Captain Carter and his wife directly to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda right now. No local doctor touches her again.”
“Yes, sir!”

I walked toward the Black Hawk, the rain washing the mud and gunpowder from my hands.
Behind me, the empire of Harrington County was being loaded into federal transport vans in iron chains.
