Chapter 12 - Midnight Raid on Mercer Manor

The jury deliberated for exactly forty-two minutes.

When the foreperson stood to read the verdicts, the tension in the federal courtroom was thick enough to choke on:

Count 1: Federal Racketeering (RICO) — GUILTY.

Count 2: Environmental Terrorism and Conspiracy — GUILTY.

Count 3: Attempted First-Degree Murder — GUILTY.

Count 4: Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon — GUILTY.

Counts 5 through 48: Extortion, Bribery, Wire Fraud, and Deprivation of Rights — GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS.

The federal judge, a distinguished jurist known for her zero-tolerance stance on public corruption, delivered the sentences without hesitation:

Travis Mercer: Sentenced to forty-eight years in federal high-security prison without the possibility of parole, followed by twenty years of supervised probation.

Sheriff Daniel Mercer: Sentenced to two consecutive life terms at ADX Florence Supermax facility, with all personal and corporate assets forfeited to the United States Marshals Service for victim restitution.

As the US Marshals placed the heavy iron chains around Daniel Mercer’s waist, the former tyrant of Harrington County turned to look at me in the gallery.

His face was an empty mask of broken pride. He had spent his entire life building an empire of fear, believing that his badge and his local connections made him a god.

In the end, he was just another convict in an orange jumpsuit, walking into the dark belly of a federal transport van.
