Chapter 6 - The Woman Everyone Had Buried and the Lie That Built an Empire

Evelyn Moretti sat upright in a narrow hospital bed.

Her hair was white. Her voice was clear. She looked at Lorenzo as though he had simply arrived late for dinner.

"You got taller," she said.

He knelt beside her and pressed his forehead against her hand.

I stepped back. For once, I had no questions that belonged in the room.

Evelyn explained that Victor had arranged her disappearance after she uncovered falsified shipping records. He had forged her death certificate and used a private clinic to keep her isolated.

"I signed nothing willingly," she said.

Lorenzo asked why she had not contacted him.

"Every letter came back," she answered. "And every time I tried, they showed me photographs of you."

I thought of Maya and the threats that had driven her underground.

Evelyn caught my sleeve.

"Your sister brought me the records. She told me someone outside this place still believed me."

"Where is she now?"

"They moved her before dawn. She hid a copy where they wouldn't search."

Evelyn pointed at the hem of her blanket. Inside the seam was a memory card wrapped in tissue.

Naomi insisted we leave immediately. Lorenzo wanted to confront Victor.

"Not until we can prove it," I said.

Evelyn squeezed his hand.

"Listen to your wife," she told him.

The word wife made my stomach twist. I had agreed to a contract. Somehow it had become a promise to keep people alive.
