Chapter 15 - The Woman Who Walked Away From His Table and Came Back Only When She Was Free — The End

A year later, I returned to the Obsidian Lounge as a guest.
Julian greeted me at the door. The piano sounded softer than I remembered. At table four, an elderly couple shared a dessert and argued happily over the last strawberry.
Lorenzo stood when I approached.
"You picked the table," he said.
"I told you I would."
Maya arrived a few minutes later with Evelyn. They were both healthy enough to complain about the traffic. Naomi joined us after work, carrying a stack of invitations to the opening of our workers' legal clinic.
The clinic was mine to run. The funding came from dozens of donors, not one powerful man's permission. We had already helped twenty-seven workers recover unpaid wages and find safe jobs.
Victor's trial had ended in convictions. The victims received restitution where assets could be recovered. The investigations into the remaining officials continued.
No ending erased the months Maya had lost. No apology restored Evelyn's stolen years. We made room for those truths at the table.
After dinner, Lorenzo walked me outside.
"I love you," he said. "I won't ask you to prove anything in return."
I took his hand because I wanted to.
"I love you too. But I still won't come when you snap your fingers."
He laughed, and the sound carried into the street.
The first night we met, I'd been afraid that saying no would cost me everything.
Now I knew what that word had given me.
My sister was home. My work mattered. My future belonged to me.
And the man beside me understood that love wasn't obedience.

It was a choice we could make again tomorrow.
The End.
