Chapter 10 - The Raid That Found an Empty Room and a Letter Written for Me

The raid began at five in the morning.

I waited in the prosecutor's office, drinking coffee that tasted like burned paper. Lorenzo sat across from me. Neither of us spoke much.

At seven, the detective called.

The yard was empty. The storage building had been cleaned, but technicians found medication labels and a bloodstained blanket.

"No patients," she said. "Not yet."

I stared at the wall until its paint seemed to move.

Then she added that a letter had been taped inside an air vent.

It was addressed to me.

Maya had written that Victor was preparing to leave the country. He planned to take the remaining witnesses aboard a private medical transport disguised as a charity flight.

She did not know the airport. But she had overheard the words North Terminal and Saturday.

Lorenzo's company operated freight flights through a small regional airfield. He checked the schedules and found a charter filed under an unfamiliar charity.

The prosecutor obtained a warrant.

For the first time in weeks, we had a place and a time.

I slept for twenty minutes that night, still holding Maya's letter.
