Chapter 4 - The Lawyer Who Wrote My Marriage Contract Had Signed My Sister Into a Locked Ward

I confronted Naomi in the hallway before Lorenzo returned.
She read the note without blinking. Then she shut her office door.
"I signed an emergency transfer," she said. "Maya begged me to."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was instructed to tell no one. Including Lorenzo."
She pulled a duplicate transfer form from a safe. Maya's signature appeared at the bottom, beside a date three days after she vanished.
The receiving facility was listed as Westhaven Recovery. There was no street address.
"Who instructed you?" I asked.
Naomi's jaw worked.
"Your sister. She said you would come looking, and that anyone who knew where she was would become a target."
"Then why leave your name?"
"Because she wanted you to ask me about the patient who came before her."
Naomi turned the page. A second name had been blacked out. I held the sheet against the window until faint indentations showed through.
Evelyn Moretti.
Lorenzo's mother had died fifteen years earlier. That was what every article said.
When I asked Naomi about her, she looked at the door.
"You need to speak with Lorenzo."
He arrived before I could answer. One glance at the form made him stop.
"Where did you find that name?"
I showed him.
For the first time, the man who had terrified an entire lounge looked afraid.
"My mother," he whispered, "was never admitted to Westhaven."
May you like
Naomi lowered her eyes.
"That's what Victor wanted you to believe."
