Chapter 9 - THE SHADOWS OF THE PAST

The peace, however, was not destined to go untested.

Three weeks after the federal audit fiasco, Abel intercepted an encrypted transmission originating from a black-site federal holding facility in Virginia.

Veronica Vance had made a deal.

In exchange for a reduced sentence and witness relocation, she had agreed to testify before a secret federal grand jury regarding the inner workings of the Callahan financial network—specifically pointing out Sophie Miller as the mastermind behind the recent regulatory counter-strike.

In the private study of the Callahan estate, Christian threw the transcript report onto the mahogany desk.

"She's desperate," Christian said, his jaw tightening. "She wants a final retaliation before she’s locked away for good."

Sophie looked down at the printed transcript. "If she testifies before the grand jury, she'll try to drag my name—and your company—back into the federal spotlight."

"She won't make it to the grand jury," Christian stated flatly, reaching for his suit jacket.

"What are you going to do?" Sophie asked, stepping in front of him.

"I'm going to finish what started in that wine cellar," Christian said, his gray eyes flashing with cold resolve. "Some ghosts need to be buried permanently."

"No," Sophie said, shaking her head. "If you intercept her transfer now, the federal marshals will use it as an act of war. It's a trap, Christian. She wants you to break her out or silence her so they can charge you with obstruction of justice."

Christian paused, his hand hovering over the door handle. "Then what do you propose we do? Sit back and wait for her to lie her way into a federal indictment against you?"

"We don't wait," Sophie said, her eyes flashing with a sudden, brilliant spark. "We beat her at her own game."

"Explain."

"Veronica is relying on the fact that her federal handlers believe her fabricated timeline," Sophie said, pulling a tablet from her bag and tapping the screen. "When we exposed her glove at Le Jardin Noir, she didn't just lose a wiretap. She lost the master encryption key to her entire intelligence unit's database. If we anonymously leak that master key to investigative journalists alongside her true service record as a compromised double agent..."

Christian stared at her, the pieces clicking together in his mind with terrifying clarity.

"The Department of Justice won't put a discredited double agent on the witness stand," Christian finished for her, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his face. "They'll discredit her testimony, seal the grand jury records, and bury her in a maximum-security black site to cover their own incompetence."

"Precisely," Sophie nodded. "Checkmate."
