Chapter 8 - THE PRESS LEAK AND THE FALL OF THE AUDITORS

Within forty-eight hours of Sophie’s dossier reaching the desks of investigative journalists at the Chicago Tribune and the House Oversight Committee, the political landscape shifted like tectonic plates.

Headlines erupted across national news networks:

FEDERAL REGULATORY BOARD IMPLICATED IN CORRUPT WATERFRONT CONTRACTS!

INSPECTION CRACKDOWN ON PRIVATE FIRMS WAS A SMOKESCREEN FOR EMBARRASSING SYNDICATE TIES!

The federal auditors freezing Callahan Logistics suddenly found themselves subpoenaed to testify before a live congressional hearing in Washington.

The audit was dropped overnight.

The shipping docks returned to full, unhindered operation.

On a crisp Friday evening, the private penthouse of Callahan Tower was bathed in the warm, golden glow of sunset.

Christian poured two glasses of aged scotch, handing one to Sophie as she stood by the glass wall overlooking the city.

"To bureaucratic warfare," Christian toasted, clinking his glass against hers.

"May the red tape choke them," Sophie smiled, taking a small sip of the smooth, smoky liquor.

Christian set his glass down on the marble bar. He stepped closer, his broad shoulders blocking the amber light of the setting sun.

"When I brought you into this world, Sophie, I thought I was simply repaying a debt," Christian said, his voice unusually quiet, stripped of the commanding edge he used in boardrooms. "I thought you were just a smart girl who got lucky in a restaurant."

"And now?" Sophie asked, her heart beating a little faster against her ribs.

"Now," Christian said, his hand reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear, "I realize you didn't just stumble into my life. You navigated it."

He didn't pull away.

His fingers rested against the warm skin of her neck, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw.

Sophie didn't step back.

For months, the invisible wall between the mafia boss and his corporate liaison had held firm. But tonight, standing above the city they had both conquered in their own way, the barrier dissolved completely.

Christian leaned down, pressing his lips softly against hers.

The kiss was slow, deliberate, and charged with the undeniable weight of everything they had survived together.

When he finally pulled back, his dark eyes were burning with an intensity that made her breath catch.

"Stay with me, Sophie," he whispered. "Not just as a liaison. Not just as an employee."

Sophie looked up into his eyes, seeing past the armor of the syndicate boss, finding the man who had risked everything to protect his family and honor his word.

May you like

"I never planned on leaving," she whispered back.
