Chapter 7 - THE FEDERAL AUDIT TRAP

The audit hit Callahan Logistics like a sudden squall on Lake Michigan.
Within forty-eight hours, federal investigators swarmed the shipping docks, seizing manifests, inspecting cargo containers, and freezing minor subsidiary accounts under the pretense of a routine compliance check.
It was a retaliatory strike—petty, bureaucratic, and designed to bleed the syndicate through legal expenses and operational delays.
In the private study of the Callahan estate, Christian and his chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance (no relation to Veronica), poured over the federal injunction notices spread across the mahogany desk.
"They're using the Department of Transportation compliance loophole," Marcus explained, pushing his glasses up his nose. "They can't prove criminal activity, so they're tying up our shipping routes with endless safety inspections."
Sophie stood by the fireplace, her arms crossed over her chest. "They want to force you into a corner, Mr. Callahan. If you retaliate violently, they get the RICO charges they’ve been hunting for years. If you do nothing, your supply lines bleed out in customs."
Christian looked up from the documents, his gray eyes calculating. "And what would you do, Sophie?"
"Don't fight them in the courtroom," Sophie said without hesitation. "And don't fight them on the docks."
Marcus frowned. "Then how do we fight a federal regulatory board?"
"By turning their own bureaucracy against them," Sophie said, stepping forward and laying a folder of documents onto the desk. "While looking through the community endowment records last week, I noticed that the federal regulatory board handling the port authority’s compliance inspections recently approved a multi-million-dollar waterfront development contract for a shell company owned by Richard Bennett’s former associates."
Christian’s eyes narrowed. "Bennett’s associates? The same ones who went down for the south side arsons?"
"The very same," Sophie nodded. "The grant was fast-tracked without standard environmental clearance reviews. If we leak those approval forms to the independent press and the congressional oversight committee, the federal auditors will be too busy defending their own corruption scandal to audit your docks."
Marcus stared at the documents in stunned silence, then looked up at Christian. "Boss... she just handed us a federal counter-strike on a silver platter."
Christian stood up slowly. He walked over to Sophie, stopping just inches away.
"You never cease to amaze me, Sophie," he murmured, his voice dropping into a low, intimate register.
"Survival requires adaptation," she replied calmly, holding his gaze.

"Then go execute the counter-strike," Christian instructed. "Let’s see how the federal auditors like drowning in their own red tape."
