Chapter 15 - The Golden Star

Three months later, the spring sun broke over the private gardens of the Lombardi estate in upstate New York.

The air smelled of blooming lilac, fresh-cut clover, and warm pine needles. On a stone terrace overlooking the rolling green lawns, Isabella sat in a wicker armchair, sketching in a leather-bound design book. Her wrists were clear of bruises, her skin radiant with returned health and peace.

A few yards away, Mia ran through the grass, laughing as she chased a golden retriever puppy.

The child wore a bright, sleeveless yellow sundress. Her bare arms and shoulders caught the golden midday light, free of heavy coats, free of dark wool, free of secrets.

Massimo sat on a stone bench nearby, watching the little girl with a quiet, unshakeable warmth in his eyes.

Mia suddenly stopped, plucked a bright yellow dandelion from the grass, and ran over to Massimo's bench. She scrambled up onto the stone seat and reached into her small dress pocket.

"Grandpa! Look!"

She opened her tiny palm. Resting inside was a brand-new hairpin.

It was crafted from solid eighteen-karat yellow gold, designed by Isabella herself, shaped like a five-pointed star with a brilliant diamond set into the center. But nestled right beside it in her pocket were the two glued-together halves of her original plastic star.

Massimo smiled, taking both the flower and the child's small hand into his own.

"Which one is your favorite, Mia?" he asked softly.

Mia picked up the crooked, glued-together plastic star and held it up to the sun. The cheap yellow plastic caught the light, gleaming brightly against the blue sky.

"This one," she said proudly. "Because it didn't stay broken."

Massimo pulled his granddaughter into his lap, holding her against his heart where she would never have to hide again.

"No, sweetheart," Massimo murmured, kissing her hair. "It never stayed broken. And neither did you."
