Chapter 12 - The Evidence in Crystal

At dawn, Detective Miller of the NYPD Special Victims Unit stood in the center of the Grand Sovereign Hotel lounge.
The crime scene tape fluttered in the air-conditioning breeze. Hotel staff had not been permitted to clean a single inch of the floor.
Miller crouched beside the crushed brass wine cart. The pool of dark red wine had dried into a sticky, crimson stain across the marble. Scattered among the shards of shattered Baccarat crystal were the physical fragments of the night’s horror.
He picked up an evidence bag containing two items retrieved from the dried wine pool: the two broken halves of a cheap, yellow plastic star hairpin.
Next, his partner brought over the hotel’s 4K security footage stored on an encrypted flash drive. Miller plugged it into his laptop and watched the playback.
The footage showed everything: Mia offering the hairpin; Vanessa breaking it with sneering delight and dropping it into the wine; Grant threatening the child; the arrival of Massimo; the lifting of the heavy woolen sweater to reveal the catastrophic bruising; Grant lunging with his finger in Massimo’s face; and the subsequent, brutal counter-strike that demolished the lounge.
Miller closed the laptop.
"Self-defense and defense of a minor against an active abuser," Miller said to his partner. "As for Grant Hale and Vanessa Hale... prepare the warrants. Felony child abuse, aggravated domestic assault, tampering with a minor, and reckless endangerment."

"What about Massimo Lombardi’s strike?" the partner asked.
Miller looked at the photograph of the little girl’s crushed ribs on his clipboard. "I didn't see an assault. I saw a grandfather removing a threat."
