Chapter 1 - The Star in the Lounge

The Grand Sovereign Hotel’s executive lounge smelled of polished mahogany, gardenias, and vintage cognac. Beneath the soft, ambient glow of tier-drop crystal chandeliers, a grand piano murmured a muted jazz ballad. Wealth in this room did not shout; it whispered through silk linings, platinum wristwatches, and discreet nods between men who controlled shipping lanes and hedge funds.
In the deepest corner, seated on a curved banquette of crimson velvet, sat Grant Hale and his sister, Vanessa.
Grant was dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, his cuff links catching the amber light as he swirled a glass of neat Macallan. Beside him, Vanessa looked like an illustration cut from a European fashion weekly. She wore a backless evening gown of blood-red silk satin that pooled against the dark carpet, her collarbones framed by a five-strand diamond necklace.
A few feet away stood four-year-old Mia.
The child looked terribly out of place. In a climate-controlled room heated to seventy-two degrees, Mia wore a heavy, coarse cable-knit woolen sweater that hung past her knees like a suffocating blanket. Her tiny sneakers scuffed silently against the runner as she took hesitant, measured steps toward the table.
In her small, trembling hands, she carried a cheap, bright yellow plastic hairpin shaped like a five-pointed star. It was the kind of trinket bought from a dollar store—scratched, unpolished, and completely worthless in a room where a single cocktail cost more than a seamstress’s weekly wage.

Mia stopped before Vanessa. She kept her head bowed, her small shoulders rigid under the suffocating wool.
"Aunt Vanessa..." Mia whispered, her voice fragile enough to break beneath the weight of the lounge’s silence. "I... I saved this for you. So you won’t yell at Mommy anymore."
