Chapter 9 - Detective Vance Enters the Labyrinth

Detective Elena Vance met Marcus at the maintenance portal precisely at 7:10 p.m., flanked by four heavily armed state agents wearing tactical vests with GBI emblazoned in gold across their chests.

"Sterling’s private security is armed," Marcus warned as Elena racked the slide of her Glock 19. "Vance, his security chief, was carrying high-caliber concealed."

"They aren't private security—they’re private mercenaries hired through a shell corporation in Delaware," Elena said coldly. "We’ve already secured federal search warrants based on your video evidence and Maya’s toxicology report. We have full authorization for dynamic entry."

Elena breached the heavy iron maintenance door with a tactical pry bar. The team descended into the dark, subterranean bowels of the hospital. The air turned damp, smelling of ancient concrete, ozone, and steam pipes.

Following the faint hum of high-voltage commercial air conditioning units, they navigated a labyrinth of forgotten brick corridors until they reached a reinforced steel blast door. Beside the door hung a modern digital biometric keypad glowing red.

"This doesn't belong in a 1960s bunker," Elena whispered.

Marcus stepped forward and examined the keypad. "It requires an executive keycard override."

"We don't need a card," Elena said, gesturing to her breaching specialist.

The agent applied a compact thermal-hydraulic charge to the heavy hinges. A muffled CRACK echoed through the corridor as the steel frame sheared open. Elena kicked the heavy door inward, leading the tactical sweep into the glaring fluorescent light of the hidden complex.

What they saw took their breath away.
