Chapter 4 - The Black-Market Cradle

Marcus left the breakroom with his heart thudding against his ribs. He knew that the moment Tiana and the other four nurses were loaded onto that private transport, they would vanish into an impenetrable network of private security, forged medical waivers, and off-shore non-disclosure agreements.

He had less than twelve hours to act.

Instead of running to local law enforcement—where Sterling’s political influence ran deep through the city council—Marcus walked down the corridor to the pathology sub-basement. There worked Dr. Maya Lin, a brilliant, fiercely independent toxicologist who owed nothing to the hospital’s executive hierarchy.

"Maya, I need an immediate mass spectrometry scan on this liquid," Marcus said, placing the specimen cup on her stainless-steel bench. "Stat. Off the record."

Maya raised an eyebrow, adjusting her glasses. "Off the record? Marcus, if Sterling’s administrative compliance officers catch me running unauthorized panels—"

"Maya, look at me," Marcus urged, leaning over the counter. "Five of our nurses are pregnant without their knowledge. Someone is drugging them in Room 412-C. If this water contains what I think it contains, we are dealing with systematic human trafficking disguised as reproductive medicine."

Maya’s cynical expression vanished instantly. She took the vial, inserted an aliquot into the gas chromatograph, and initiated the high-speed analysis. Ten minutes of tense silence passed while the machinery hummed.

The screen pinged with a chemical breakdown.

"Good God," Maya whispered, pointing at the spectral peaks. "It’s Remimazolam compounded with an unlisted synthetic neuro-blocker. It’s an ultra-short-acting amnestic sedative. It kicks in within ten minutes of oral ingestion, knocks the patient into a twilight state where they obey basic verbal commands, and leaves zero memory trace upon waking. It completely metabolizes into inactive carboxylic acid within four hours."

"That’s how he walked them back to their chairs," Marcus breathed, his blood running cold. "He didn’t even have to carry them. He just guided them into the room, performed the transfer, guided them back to their desks, and let the sunrise wake them up."

"Who is 'he', Marcus?" Maya asked, terrified.

"Sterling," Marcus said grimly. "And whoever is funding him."

May you like

"You can't take this to the police precinct down the street," Maya warned. "Sterling’s brother-in-law is the Deputy Chief of Police. If you walk in with an unverified USB drive, that evidence will be shredded before you reach the elevator."

"Then I need someone outside the local precinct," Marcus replied. "I need Detective Elena Vance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. But first, I have to go back to 412-C. Darius is waking up."
