Chapter 5 - Betrayal in White Coats

At 1:15 p.m., Marcus returned to the fourth floor under the guise of conducting routine neurological assessments. The ward was eerily quiet. Two private security guards wearing unmarked black blazers were already stationed near the elevators—Sterling’s private enforcers, ensuring that none of the affected nurses left the building before the scheduled 8:00 p.m. "retreat."

Marcus slipped into Room 412-C and quietly locked the deadbolt behind him.

"Darius," Marcus whispered, stepping swiftly to the bedside. "I know you can hear me."

He pulled a penlight from his pocket and gently lifted Darius’s left eyelid. The pupil reacted instantly, constricting against the light. Marcus placed his fingertips against the firefighter’s right palm.

"Darius, my name is Dr. Marcus Johnson. You have been in a coma for three years, but your brain is healing. You are safe with me, but we are in severe danger. If you can hear my voice, give me everything you have. Squeeze my hand."

For five agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The heart rate monitor remained steady at sixty-two beats per minute.

Then, Darius’s breathing hitched. The chest rise became deeper, more deliberate. Beneath Marcus’s fingers, the scarred, calloused hand of the firefighter trembled violently.

Slowly, with titanic effort that sent sweat beading across his forehead, Darius’s fingers curled inward. His grip tightened around Marcus’s hand with crushing, undeniable strength.

"I’ve got you," Marcus whispered, his eyes stinging with emotion. "I’ve got you, brother."

Suddenly, Darius’s dry lips parted. A ragged, raspy sound escaped his throat, barely louder than a breath of wind:

“...S-Sterling...”

Marcus froze. "You heard his name?"

Darius’s eyelids fluttered, straining against years of disuse, before opening a fraction of an inch. His dark eyes, clouded but burning with lucid intelligence, fixed directly onto Marcus.

“...B-Basement...” Darius wheezed, his vocal cords raw and scraping. “...Sub... Level... Three...”

Before Marcus could ask another question, the brass handle of the door rattled violently. Someone inserted an emergency override key into the lock.
