Chapter 3 - THE LAKESIDE ENCOUNTER AND THE UNANSWERED QUESTION

The air at the lakeside house smelled of wet pine and autumn mist.
The water was as still as dark glass.
I sat on the wooden porch swing, wrapped in a thick wool cardigan.
Forty-seven days had passed since that morning in the basilica.
Forty-seven days of silence.
No bodyguards tracking my steps.
No phone calls from Rome.
Just the quiet rhythm of the lake and the slow healing of a shattered heart.
Then, gravel crunched under the tires of a single car.
A black sedan pulled up near the willow trees.
The engine died.
The driver’s side door opened.
Alessandro stepped out.
He looked thinner.
Shadows bruised the skin beneath his gray eyes.
He wore no tie, no expensive Rolex, no armor of a Don.
He walked slowly toward the porch, stopping three steps away.
He pulled a small velvet box from his coat pocket.
He opened it.
The antique watch caught the pale afternoon light.
The engraved words gleamed softly against the polished metal.
Thirteen years behind us. The rest of our lives ahead.
“Serena,” he whispered, his voice cracking.
“Is the rest of our lives really over?”
I stood up from the swing.
My hands were steady.
My heart didn't race the way it used to when he entered a room.
“You brought the watch, Alex,” I said, my voice calm.
“I brought the only thing that matters,” he replied, stepping closer.
“Besides you.”
I looked into the eyes of the man I had loved since I was seventeen years old.
The man who had promised me a safe life, only to build his secrets on a foundation of betrayal.
“Forty-seven days, Alex,” I said softly.
“Eighty-six phone calls.”
“Thirty-one messages.”
“And you still haven't answered the only question that counts.”
Alessandro stopped.
His breath hitched in his throat.
“Ask me anything,” he pleaded.
“Anything in this world.”
I locked my gaze onto his.
“When I walked out of that hotel room in Venice,” I said clearly.
“When you saw my face, when you knew I had caught you red-handed with Bianca Moretti...”
“Why did you stay?”
“Why did you let me walk away alone and spend nine more hours with her?”
The lake breeze blew past us, carrying the chill of the coming winter.
Alessandro opened his mouth to speak.
No words came out.

For the first time in thirteen years, the most powerful man in Rome stood completely defenseless.
And in his silence, I found my final answer.
