Chapter 13 - THE ENGAGEMENT RING RETURNS

Alessandro reached into his pocket once more.
He didn't pull out the antique watch this time.
He pulled out my engagement ring.
The diamond caught the penthouse lights, shining brighter than it ever had before.
He dropped down onto one right knee on the polished marble floor.
I looked down at him, my heart swelling with a deep, unbreakable peace.
“Thirteen years ago, I promised to give you a safe life,” Alessandro said, his voice thick with emotion.
“I failed that promise because I let my enemies touch our world.”
“I’m not asking you to forgive me blindly today.”
“I’m asking you to let me spend every single day of the rest of our lives proving that you are my only home.”
He held the ring up toward me.
“Will you marry me, Serena?”
I didn't cry this time.
I smiled.
I reached out my left hand.
He slid the diamond ring back onto my finger, where it belonged.
Then I pulled him up from the floor, wrapping my arms around his neck, and kissed him with all the fierce, undying love that had survived a thirteen-year war.
Marcus stood near the elevator doors, clearing his throat awkwardly as he looked away.
“Um, Boss,” Marcus called out.
“The caterers are on line two.”

“Tell them to reinstate the white roses,” Alessandro replied without breaking his embrace.
“We have a wedding to finish.”
