Chapter 9 - The Audio Cassette Sarah Left Behind

The bank’s reinforced glass lobby shattered under a hail of automatic gunfire.

Three black SUVs had blocked the street, spilling heavily armed men in tactical gear onto the pavement.

“Down!” the Swiss security guard screamed, shoving me behind a heavy marble pillar as bullets chewed through the plaster above our heads.

My heart hammered against my ribs, but my hands locked tight around the waterproof case.

I cannot fail. Not now. Not when we are this close.

Luca’s guards returned fire with ruthless efficiency. The sound inside the stone lobby was deafening, the smell of cordite thick in the air.

“The underground garage!” Monsieur Laurent shouted, pointing toward a reinforced steel door behind the teller counters. “There is an armored transport vehicle used for gold bullion!”

We sprinted across the ruined lobby under covering fire.

One of Luca’s guards took a bullet to the shoulder but kept firing until the heavy vault door slammed shut behind us, cutting off the gunfire.

We piled into the massive steel-plated transport van.

The driver slammed the gas pedal to the floor, smashing through the underground gate and bursting out into the rainy streets of Geneva at ninety miles per hour.

Two pursuit vehicles lunged behind us, but Luca’s Swiss team deployed spike strips from the rear bumper, sending the first SUV spinning out of control into the stone barriers of the Pont du Mont-Blanc.

We made it back to the private airfield in twelve minutes.

The Gulfstream’s engines were already screaming, taxiing onto the runway the moment our tires hit the tarmac.

I was pulled aboard, the door sealed, and the jet lifted into the stormy sky, leaving the burning wreckage of Falcone’s ambush far behind.

Inside the quiet cabin, ten thousand feet above the Atlantic, I plugged Sarah’s micro-cassette tape into the plane’s audio console and hit PLAY.

A soft hiss of static filled the speakers.

Then, Sarah’s voice emerged.

Weak, raspy from illness, but brimming with an indomitable strength:

"Luca... my love."

"If you are hearing this, it means Valentina has finally revealed her hand. I am so sorry I could not tell you the truth with my own lips while I was alive. I saw the darkness in your eyes when we lost our first two pregnancies. I knew that if you lost our third child, the grief would swallow your humanity whole."

"Lily was sent to us by God. Her mother, Elena, was an innocent soul taken too soon. I made a promise to Elena in that quiet hospital room before she closed her eyes: I promised her that our daughter would know nothing but unconditional love, safety, and joy."

"Valentina thought she owned me through fear. But she forgot that a mother’s love is more dangerous than any mafia empire."

"Luca, don't let vengeance consume you. Protect Lily. Protect Elena’s sister, Claire. She has the same kind, fierce eyes her sister had in that photograph Elena held before she died."

"Let the past go, my darling. Live for the living."

I buried my face in my hands, sobbing quietly in the cabin seat as Sarah’s voice faded into the gentle hum of the jet engines.
