Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the Rain

The flight to Switzerland was a blur of gray clouds and roaring jet engines.

By 8:00 PM local time, the Gulfstream touched down at a private airfield outside Geneva under a torrential downpour.

Luca’s Swiss security team was waiting on the tarmac with an armored Mercedes.

We sped through the rain-slicked streets toward the historic banking district along the Rhône River.

The Banque Privée de Genève was an imposing stone fortress that had held the secrets of European royalty and global syndicates for two centuries.

The bank’s vice president, an austere man named Monsieur Laurent, escorted me down into the subterranean vaults three floors beneath the riverbed.

“Madame Moretti left very specific instructions,” Laurent said in impeccable English, adjusting his gold spectacles. “The safety deposit box requires three simultaneous keys: the bank’s master key, Sarah Moretti’s private brass key, and a physical DNA match from the legitimate guardian of the child mentioned in the trust.”

My hand hovered over the biometric scanner on the wall.

“My DNA?”

“Sarah Moretti registered a secondary biological profile six days before her passing,” Laurent explained, opening the file. “She stated that should anything happen to her, the maternal sister of Elena Dawson possessed sole legal claim to open vault 408.”

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes.

Sarah had known everything.

Even as her body was failing, she had anticipated this exact moment. She had protected my sister’s legacy, protected Lily, and ensured that when the truth finally emerged, the power to unlock it would belong to me.

I pressed my thumb against the glass sensor.

A soft green light flashed.

BEEP.

MATCH CONFIRMED: DAWSON, CLAIRE.

The heavy steel door of Vault 408 swung open with a pneumatic hiss.

Inside sat a lacquered wooden chest.

I lifted the lid.

Inside lay the signed, notarized affidavit of Dr. Robert Harris—the physician who had delivered Lily—detailing Valentina Vance’s extortion, her ties to the Falcone family, and the falsification of the death certificates.

And beneath the document lay an old micro-cassette audio tape labeled in Sarah’s delicate handwriting:

FOR LUCA — PLAY WHEN THE MASKS FALL.

I carefully packed the items into my waterproof case.

As Monsieur Laurent and I returned to the bank’s ground floor, the sound of muffled gunfire echoed from the street outside.

The security alarms blared to life in piercing red strobes.

“Falcone’s men,” the security chief shouted in French, drawing his sidearm. “They followed us from the airfield!”
