Chapter 14 - Sarah’s Final Protection
Two weeks later, the mansion was peaceful once more.
The autumn leaves had turned vibrant shades of red and gold, falling gently across the sprawling lawns.
The dark clouds that had hung over the Moretti estate for five long years had finally vanished, replaced by the warmth of a new beginning.
In the private family cemetery atop the hill overlooking the lake, Luca, Lily, Evelyn, and I stood before Sarah’s white marble tombstone.
Beside Sarah’s monument, a brand-new marble headstone had been erected that morning, carved with the name:
ELENA DAWSON — BELOVED MOTHER AND SISTER — FOREVER WATCHING OVER LILY.
Lily knelt between the two graves, placing a bouquet of fresh white roses on Sarah’s stone and a bouquet of yellow daisies on Elena’s stone.
“They’re best friends in heaven now, right Daddy?” Lily asked, looking up.
“The best of friends,” Luca said softly, his arm resting gently around my shoulders.
Evelyn stepped forward, holding the final missing piece of Sarah’s letter—the second page that Luca’s men had recovered from Valentina’s hidden safe.
Luca opened it and read the final words Sarah had written for him:
"My dearest Luca,"
"If you are reading this, it means you have weathered the storm. It means you have learned that a family is not defined solely by the blood we share, but by the love we choose to give every single day."
"Do not close your heart to the world, my love. Lily needs a father who is happy, who can laugh without the shadow of my memory holding him back."
"If Claire is by your side, cherish her. She has the purest soul I have ever known from the stories Elena shared with me. Give Lily the life she deserves, full of sunshine and laughter."
"I will always be the breeze across the lake, whispering peace to your weary heart."
May you like
"Forever yours, Sarah."
Luca pressed the letter against his heart, closed his eyes, and let out a long, peaceful breath that seemed to release five years of accumulated pain and sorrow.
