Chapter 15 - The Recipe That Brought Us Home

Six months later.
The kitchen of the Moretti estate was filled with the delicious aroma of roasted chicken, carrots, fresh celery, and simmered rosemary broth.
There were no Michelin-starred chefs in white coats today.
No security guards watching the doors with weapons drawn.
Just Evelyn Hart standing at the stove, wearing her favorite lavender cardigan, guiding Lily’s small hands as they stirred the big stainless-steel pot with a long wooden spoon.
“Two pinches of sea salt, Lily,” Evelyn instructed with a warm smile. “Just like your mother liked it.”
Lily carefully dropped the salt into the broth, clapping her hands with delight.
“And then we let it simmer until Daddy comes home!” Lily cheered.
I sat at the breakfast island, going over the estate’s philanthropic foundation records. We had established the Elena & Sarah Foundation, dedicated to providing free prenatal and neonatal care to low-income mothers across Chicago, ensuring no child or mother would ever be exploited again.
The back door opened, and Luca stepped inside.
He was wearing a simple navy sweater and jeans—no formal tuxedos, no tactical gear, no dark shadows in his eyes.
He walked straight over to the stove, leaned down, and kissed Lily on the top of her head.
“What smells so incredible in my kitchen?” Luca asked, smiling.
“Mommy’s soup!” Lily said proudly, offering him a wooden spoon. “Taste it, Daddy!”
Luca took the spoon, blew gently on the hot broth, and tasted it.
His eyes closed for a moment, savoring the warmth, the memory, and the immense peace that filled the room.
“It is perfection, my heart. Absolute perfection.”
Luca then walked over to the breakfast island where I was sitting.
He didn't say a word. He simply reached down, took my hand, and pulled me gently to my feet.
Before Evelyn and Lily, Luca Moretti drew me into his arms and kissed me with a deep, passionate tenderness that took my breath away.
“Thank you for bringing life back to this house, Claire,” he whispered against my lips.
“Thank you for giving me a family to protect,” I replied softly.
Lily ran over and wrapped her small arms around both of our legs, giggling happily.
Evelyn watched us from the stove, tears of joy in her eyes, raising her wooden spoon in a quiet toast to the memory of two brave mothers who had orchestrated a miracle from beyond the stars.
The soup was warm.
The house was safe.
