Chapter 5 - The Sister Nobody Mentioned

By 4:30 AM, I pulled the battered sedan through the rear security gates of the Moretti estate in Chicago.
Luca was waiting for me in the underground garage.
He was flanked by three heavily armed guards, his face carved from dark fury and exhaustion. The moment my car stopped, he personally opened the driver's door and helped me out.
He saw the blood on my hands and the dirt on my clothes.
His eyes flared with dangerous intensity.
“Who touched you?” he demanded, his voice low and deadly.
“Vanessa had a man waiting at the cottage,” I gasped, leaning against the car frame. “He tried to kill me. He had a direct radio link to her.”
Luca turned to Marco.
“Lock every gate. Cut the mansion’s outside phone lines. If Vanessa Bellini attempts to leave her quarters, put a bullet in her tires.”
“Understood, boss,” Marco said, disappearing up the concrete steps with four men.
Luca took my satchel and guided me into his private underground study—a soundproof room beneath the wine cellar where no wiretaps or surveillance could ever reach.
He poured two glasses of scotch, handed one to me, and sat behind the heavy oak desk.
“Show me,” he commanded.
I placed Sarah’s leather diary and the neonatal files in front of him.
Luca opened the journal.
For thirty minutes, absolute silence hung in the room.
Luca read his late wife’s words. I watched the emotions cross his face—shock, devastation, and finally, a cold, calculating rage that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
When he finally reached the neonatal blood charts, his hands remained perfectly still.
“Sarah knew,” Luca whispered. His voice was hollow. “She knew Lily wasn't ours.”
“Read page forty-two, Mr. Moretti,” I said gently.
Luca turned the page.
Sarah’s handwriting detailed the night Lily was brought into their lives:
"My baby died twelve minutes after delivery. Her little heart simply stopped. I was bleeding out, drifting in and out of consciousness. The doctors told Luca our daughter was in the incubator."
"Valentina Vance approached my bed three hours later while Luca was signing paperwork in the hallway. She told me a young, unwed mother in the charity ward had died during childbirth at the exact same hour, leaving a healthy baby girl with no family, marked for the state system."
"Valentina switched the infant tags. She placed that orphaned baby into my arms and whispered: ‘Your husband will never survive losing both a wife and a child tonight. Keep this baby, and I will keep your secret.’"
Luca closed his eyes. A single muscle ticked in his jaw.
“Sarah kept the child to protect me,” Luca said, his voice breaking. “Because she thought I would tear the city apart in grief.”
“And Valentina Vance used that secret to hold a knife to Sarah’s throat for two years,” I added. “Demanding money. Demanding access. And when Sarah refused to let her near Lily after the cancer diagnosis, Valentina changed her identity. She became Vanessa Bellini, orchestrated a meeting with you, and worked her way directly into your bed.”
Luca opened his eyes. The grief was gone, replaced by the lethal resolve of a mafia don who had uncovered the snake in his garden.
“There is one more thing,” Luca said, pointing to a name underlined at the bottom of the hospital log.
Mother of orphaned child: Elena Dawson.
I stopped breathing.
The room began to spin.
“Elena Dawson?” I choked out. “That... that was my older sister.”
Luca looked up at me, his eyes widening in sudden realization.
“Your sister died seven years ago?”
“At Mercy General Hospital,” I whispered, tears blurring my vision. “They told my family the baby didn't survive delivery. They told us both Elena and the infant were buried in the county potter's field because we couldn't afford the private hospital morgue fees.”
The realization crashed down upon us like a tidal wave.
Lily was not a stranger’s child.
Lily was my niece.

My flesh and blood.
And Vanessa had spent seven years profiting from the destruction of both our families.
