Chapter 7 - A Father’s Awakening Rage

The blast wave threw me against the living room couch as wood, drywall, and glass exploded through the lower level.

The power cut out instantly.

The safehouse was plunged into pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by the flickering red emergency backup strips along the baseboards.

“Go!” Luca yelled, pushing me toward the stairwell as automatic gunfire ripped through the shattered kitchen windows.

I didn't look back. I scrambled up the wooden stairs in the dark, my heart in my throat.

I reached the master bedroom, burst inside, and locked the heavy oak door behind me, throwing the deadbolt in place.

Lily was sitting upright in bed, wide awake and terrified.

“Claire!” she screamed over the deafening roar of gunfire below.

“I’m here, Lily! I’m right here!” I rushed to the bed, pulled her onto the floor, and dragged the heavy mattress down on top of us against the inner brick wall, creating a makeshift bunker against stray bullets.

Downstairs, the battle was ferocious.

Luca wasn't just defending his home; he was unleashing five years of suppressed fury. The rhythmic, thunderous cracks of his heavy-caliber sidearm sounded like cannon fire compared to the rapid chatter of the assassins’ suppressed rifles.

I heard glass crunching under boots.

A man screamed in agony downstairs, followed by a sickening crunch that could only be bone breaking.

“You think you can come after my family?” Luca’s voice roared through the estate, carrying a terrifying, primal power that made the floorboards vibrate. “You think you can touch my daughter?”

More shots echoed.

Two loud bangs rattled the wooden ceiling right below us.

Then, heavy footsteps began running up the staircase.

My blood ran ice-cold.

I pulled the pistol from my waistband, clicked off the safety, and pointed it directly at the locked bedroom door.

Lily pressed her face against my ribs, covering her ears.

Thud.

Something heavy hit the outside of the door.

The brass handle jiggled violently.

Bang!

A boot kicked the wood right next to the lock. The oak splintered, but the heavy iron deadbolt held firm.

“Open the door!” a muffled, foreign voice barked from the hallway.

I didn't answer. I adjusted my grip, steadying my breathing just like Luca had shown me, aiming center-mass through the wood.

Bang!

Another kick cracked the frame further. A gloved hand reached through the splintered gap, feeling for the interior deadbolt.

I squeezed the trigger.

BANG!

The recoil kicked hard against my wrists. The bullet tore through the door panel.

A scream erupted from the hallway. The hand vanished, leaving a smear of dark blood on the shattered white frame.

“Shoot through the wall!” the man shouted to someone behind him.

Before they could fire, a shadow materialized behind the intruder in the hallway.

Through the hole in the door, I saw Luca.

He moved like an apex predator. In one swift, brutal motion, he grabbed the mercenary by the tactical vest, slammed him spine-first against the wall, and delivered a devastating blow that dropped the man instantly.

Luca fired two precise rounds down the staircase, neutralizing the second operative attempting to climb the steps.

Then, absolute silence descended upon the hallway.

Luca stood in the doorway, chest heaving, his face covered in soot and sweat. His torn sweater was stained with fresh blood, but his dark eyes were laser-focused on the corner where Lily and I were hiding.

“Claire,” Luca breathed, stepping through the shattered doorway. “Lily.”

“Daddy!” Lily shrieked, scrambling out from under the mattress.

Luca dropped to his knees, catching her in his arms with such force that he groaned from his wounded shoulder, but he didn't let go. He buried his face in her neck, his entire body trembling with raw relief.

“I’ve got you,” he whispered fiercely. “I’ve got you, baby. It’s over.”

I slowly lowered the pistol, the adrenaline leaving my body in a sudden, overwhelming wave that left me dizzy. I slumped back against the brick wall, my hands trembling uncontrollably.

Luca looked up from Lily.

His eyes found mine.

In that moment, there was no master and housekeeper. There was no mafia boss and servant.

There were only two people who had stood in the fire together to protect a child.

Luca reached out his arm, pulling me into his embrace alongside Lily.

I leaned into his chest, feeling the wild, rapid beat of his heart against my cheek, surrounded by the scent of pine, rain, and gunpowder.

“You shot him,” Luca whispered near my ear, his voice thick with admiration and disbelief. “You held the line.”

“I told you,” I whispered back, tears finally slipping down my cheeks. “I won't let anything happen to her.”

From the bottom of the stairs, Daniel’s voice called out, tired but triumphant.

“Boss! The perimeter is clean. Backup just rolled through the gates. The hit squad is completely eliminated.”

May you like

Luca pulled back slightly, his dark eyes searching mine with a profound, unyielding warmth.

“Tomorrow,” Luca said softly, “we build a new life. All three of us.”
