Chapter 15 - The Unsinkable Boat

Our wedding day arrived on a warm, golden Saturday in early June.

We didn't host a massive, cold gala with hundreds of mobsters and politicians.

Instead, the wedding took place in the backyard of 117 Willow Street, beneath the shade of the ancient weeping willow tree.

White fairy lights hung from the branches, illuminating the lush green lawn and dozens of arrangements of white roses and blue hydrangeas.

Only thirty people were present—Daniel and his family, our closest genuine friends, and the loyal staff who had stood by us through everything.

I wore a flowing, vintage lace gown that swept across the grass, my hair pinned up with fresh white jasmine flowers. Around my neck hung the gold sailboat pendant.

Lily was my maid of honor, looking adorable in a matching pale blue dress, carrying a basket of white petals with a huge, radiant smile on her face.

Luca stood at the altar beneath the willow branches, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo. When his dark eyes locked onto mine as I walked down the aisle, his breath hitched, and a tear of pure joy slipped down his cheek.

We spoke our own vows.

“Claire,” Luca said, holding both of my hands in his, his voice carrying the deep, unshakeable strength of a man who had found his purpose. “I spent years living in the dark, believing that love was a weakness. But you taught me that love is the greatest shield we have. I vow to protect you, to honor you, and to love you with every beat of my heart until my last breath.”

“Luca,” I choked back joyful tears, looking into the eyes of the man I adored. “You gave me a home, a purpose, and the greatest gift of my life: our family. I vow to stand by your side through every storm, to laugh with you in the sunshine, and to love you and Lily unconditionally, forever.”

The minister pronounced us husband and wife.

Luca pulled me into his arms, kissing me with an intensity and passion that drew cheers and applause from everyone in the garden.

Lily ran up and wrapped her arms around both of our waists, squeezing us tightly.

“We did it!” Lily cheered.

Luca picked Lily up in his arms, holding me tightly against his side as the wedding guests showered us with white petals.

Later that evening, after the music had faded and the guests had departed, Luca and I stood together on the back porch of 117 Willow Street, holding glasses of champagne beneath the starry night sky.

On the wooden mantel inside the living room sat Sarah’s original drawing, framed in gold. Beside it stood the wooden display stand Luca had carved, holding Lily’s crooked blue wooden boat.

Luca had repainted the lettering on the bottom with permanent gold leaf:

LUCA + CLAIRE + LILY.

Luca wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder, looking out over the quiet, peaceful garden.

“Look at our home, Claire,” Luca whispered softly, kissing my neck.

I leaned back against his strong chest, feeling the warmth of his ring against mine, completely at peace.

May you like

“It’s unsinkable, Luca,” I smiled, looking up at the stars. “Just like us.”

THE END
