Chapter 11 - Broken Chains and Hidden Truths

With the Bellini conspiracy completely dismantled, the city’s underworld underwent a massive restructuring. Luca had made his position clear to the remaining syndicate heads: the Moretti family had transitioned into legitimate maritime shipping and international logistics.
Those who wanted honest, lucrative trade routes remained his partners; those who sought bloodshed and illicit trade were cut off permanently.
Yet, despite our new peaceful routine on Willow Street, Luca never dropped his protective instincts.
Every morning at dawn, Luca would jog five miles around the quiet perimeter of the neighborhood, checking every cross street and blind alley before returning home with fresh pastries from the local bakery.
One crisp morning in late November, as a light frost dusted the grass, I found Luca sitting in the basement workshop of the cottage.
The workshop was warm, heated by a cast-iron stove, smelling of cedar and fresh wood varnish.
On the workbench sat a half-carved block of mahogany.
I walked down the wooden stairs carrying a warm mug of black coffee. “You’re up early.”
Luca looked up, a faint smile touching his lips as he wiped sawdust from his hands. “Couldn't sleep. The mind doesn't shut down as easily as the body.”
I set the coffee on the edge of the bench and leaned against the wood. “What are you building?”
Luca picked up the wooden block. It was shaped like the hull of a large sailboat, but far more detailed than Lily’s craft project.
“A display stand,” Luca explained, his fingers tracing the smooth mahogany. “For Sarah’s boat and Lily’s boat. I want them side by side on the fireplace mantel upstairs.”
My heart warmed at the thought. “Lily will love that.”
Luca set the wood down and stepped closer, wrapping his arms around my waist. The heat of his body was comforting against the morning chill.
“Claire,” he said softly, looking deeply into my eyes. “There’s something we need to talk about.”
“What is it?”
“The family trust,” Luca said. “I had my attorneys draft a new set of documents yesterday. I’ve named you as Lily’s legal co-guardian. If anything ever happens to me... full custody and control of the estate belongs to you.”
I gasped, looking at him in utter shock. “Luca... that’s an immense responsibility. Your family’s council—”
“The council has no say over my daughter,” Luca interrupted, his tone fierce and absolute. “I watched you stand in front of armed men with a pistol to protect her. I watched you put her emotional healing ahead of your own safety. There is no one on this earth I trust more with my daughter’s life than you, Claire.”
Tears gathered in my eyes. I reached up and cupped his scarred jawline. “Nothing is going to happen to you, Luca. You’re going to be here to watch her grow up. Both of us are.”
Luca pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss. His hands held me firmly against him, making me feel completely protected, cherished, and loved.
When our lips parted, he rested his forehead against mine, his breath warm against my skin.
“Tonight, I’m taking you out,” Luca whispered. “Just the two of us. Daniel and his wife will stay with Lily.”
May you like
“A real date?” I teased with a smile.
“A real date,” Luca promised. “No bodyguards at the table. No syndicate meetings. Just you and me.”
