Chapter 14 - The Trial in the Shadows

Word of our engagement spread through the city like wildfire, but this time, there were no false friends, no scheming socialites, and no hidden agendas.

Only pure, honest love.

Two days before our wedding, Luca took me and Lily back to the cemetery on the hill overlooking the ocean, where Sarah Moretti was buried.

The marble headstone had been cleaned and restored, surrounded by fresh white lilies and blooming hydrangeas.

Lily knelt down and placed the small blue wooden boat she had made beside Sarah’s headstone.

“Mom,” Lily whispered, her small voice clear and joyful. “Dad and Claire are getting married. Claire is going to be my mom now, but I will never forget you. We live in the house on Willow Street, just like you wanted.”

Luca knelt beside his daughter, placing a hand on the cool marble stone.

“Thank you, Sarah,” Luca murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “For leaving the map. For protecting our girl. You will always have a place in our hearts.”

I stood behind them, placing my hands gently on Luca’s shoulder and Lily’s back. A gentle ocean breeze rustled through the cypress trees, carrying the faint, sweet scent of vanilla across the grass.

It felt like a blessing from heaven. A final release.

Sarah was at peace, knowing her daughter was safe, cherished, and loved.
