Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Bellini Empire

Three weeks passed like a dream.

The Moretti estate in the city was officially closed down, its historical archives secured, and its heavy iron gates locked. Luca had moved all our lives permanently to 117 Willow Street.

The transformation was astonishing.

The small cottage was now filled with warmth, the smell of homemade apple pies, and the sound of Lily’s laughter echoing through the halls. The walls were freshly painted in warm cream tones, adorned with Sarah’s old drawings and Lily’s new artwork side by side.

Luca spent his mornings in the sunlit study overlooking the backyard, managing his legitimate logistics empire through secure phone calls, completely divested from the violent street syndicates.

One Tuesday afternoon, Daniel arrived at Willow Street, carrying a final legal briefing.

Luca and I were sitting on the back porch, watching Lily play with a golden retriever puppy Luca had adopted for her eighth birthday.

“Boss,” Daniel said, stepping onto the porch with a respectful nod toward me. “Claire.”

“What’s the update from Europe?” Luca asked, taking a sip of his coffee.

“The cargo ship carrying Salvatore and Vanessa docked in southern Italy two days ago,” Daniel reported. “As per the Commission’s decree, all their bank accounts have been frozen permanently. The local syndicates in Naples refused to grant them sanctuary after hearing about Sarah’s murder. Salvatore has retreated to a remote mountain village in total poverty, and Vanessa has been completely disowned by high society.”

Luca listened without a trace of anger or gloating. His face was entirely serene.

“And the investigation into Sarah’s crash?” I asked.

“Officially closed by the state supreme court,” Daniel answered with a smile. “Sarah’s death has been updated on the official public record as homicide by conspiracy, with the Bellinis named as the perpetrators. Her honor and her family’s legacy have been fully restored.”

Luca looked down at his coffee mug, exhaling a quiet breath that seemed to release the final ghost of his past.

“Thank you, Daniel,” Luca said quietly. “For everything.”

Daniel nodded, his eyes warm. “It’s an honor to see you happy, boss. Both of you.”

As Daniel walked back toward the gate, Lily came running across the green lawn, carrying the puppy in her arms, followed closely by the little blue wooden boat she had placed on the porch railing.

“Daddy! Claire! Look! Barnaby learned how to sit!” Lily beamed, setting the puppy down.

“Sit, Barnaby!” Lily commanded in her best serious voice.

The little golden puppy wobbled, looked at the treat in her hand, and promptly plopped down on the grass, wagging its tail furiously.

Luca threw his head back and laughed—a rich, deep, joyful sound that echoed through the quiet neighborhood.

He reached over and pulled me onto his lap on the porch swing. I nestled against his chest, wrapping my arms around his neck, watching the golden sunlight filter through the willow trees.

“What are you thinking about now?” Luca asked, his lips brushing against my temple.

“I’m thinking that this boat was never just a kindergarten project,” I said, looking at the crooked little wooden toy sitting on the railing.

Luca smiled, his arm tightening around my waist, his heart beating strong and steady against mine.

“No,” Luca whispered, kissing me softly under the golden autumn sky. “It was the map that brought us home.”
