Chapter 3 - Someone Forged My Resignation, but the Security Footage Showed a Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

I stared at Adrian's phone.
"I didn't resign."
"The agency received your signed letter."
He turned the screen toward me.
My name appeared beneath a typed paragraph.
The signature looked convincing.
But my mother had taught me a trick.
I always crossed the final letter twice.
The forged signature didn't.
"That's not mine," I said.
Eleanor lowered her coffee cup.
"Perhaps the stress affected your memory."
Adrian's gaze moved between us.
"I'll investigate," he said.
I wanted to believe him.
But belief was expensive in that house.
Later, I found Noah in the conservatory.
He was drawing with blue crayons.
One picture showed a woman beside a red door.
Another showed three figures near a bed.
"Who's that?" I asked.
He pointed to the woman.
"Miss June."
"Was she your nanny?"
He shook his head.
"She worked for Mommy."
"Where is she now?"
He pressed the crayon until it snapped.
"Grandma said she died."
I asked the head housekeeper about June.
Her expression tightened.
"June Bellamy left years ago."
"I heard she died."
The woman gripped her cleaning cart.
"Don't ask me that again."
That afternoon, I found a maintenance hallway.
A camera hung above the servants' stairs.
Its indicator light blinked green.
I asked the security officer for footage.
He refused.
Then I showed him my forged resignation.
"Someone entered my room," I said.
"I'm asking who."
He studied the document.
"I'll show you one minute."
The screen displayed midnight.
A woman in a gray uniform crossed the hall.
She carried a small metal case.
Her hair was silver.
Her face turned toward the camera.
I recognized her immediately.
Noah had drawn that face.
"June Bellamy," I whispered.
The officer stopped the recording.
His hands went white.
"That isn't possible."
"Why?"
May you like
He swallowed.
"I attended her funeral."
