Chapter 12 - Claire Came Home Alive, but She Asked Me Not to Leave Her Son Alone With His Grandmother's Legacy

Claire returned under federal protection.
She was thinner than her photographs.
A faint scar crossed her temple.
But her smile was unmistakably warm.
Noah stopped in the doorway.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Claire opened her arms.
"Hello, my beautiful boy."
Noah ran.
He struck her knees with such force she staggered.
Adrian caught them both.
I stood beside the stairs crying silently.
Later, Claire asked to speak privately.
We sat beneath the conservatory windows.
"He told you about the tea," she said.
I nodded.
"I wish someone had listened earlier."
She looked toward the garden.
"I tried to protect him."
"You still can."
She took my hand.
"Thank you for believing him."
I wanted to say something graceful.
Instead, I started crying again.
Claire smiled through her own tears.
"He's going to need time," she said.
"So will Adrian."
I nodded.
"I know."
"And you deserve your own life, Emma."
Those words stayed with me.
For months, I'd measured myself in debts.
Rent.
Funeral bills.

Hours worked.
I had forgotten that a life required more.
