Chapter 11 - A Letter Arrived in Claire's Handwriting, and It Changed Everything Adrian Believed About Her Death

The envelope came without a return address.

Adrian recognized the handwriting immediately.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Claire stood beside a coastal hospital.

A handwritten note accompanied it.

I AM ALIVE.

PLEASE DON'T BRING NOAH HERE YET.

Adrian sat down heavily.

I read the note twice.

There was no signature.

But the handwriting matched Claire's journals.

The investigators verified the photograph's location.

A small rehabilitation facility in Maine.

Claire had been admitted under another name.

She had suffered a serious head injury.

For months, she couldn't remember her family.

A volunteer had recently recognized her photograph.

Now Claire remembered enough to write.

Adrian wanted to leave immediately.

The investigators asked him to wait.

They needed to confirm her safety.

And they needed to understand who had hidden her.

Noah watched his father's expression.

"Is Mommy coming home?" he asked.

Adrian knelt beside him.

"We found someone who might be Mommy."

"You believe me now?"

Adrian closed his eyes.

"I should have believed you sooner."

Noah put his arms around his neck.

I stepped away to give them privacy.

Outside, the first autumn leaves were falling.

For the first time, the estate seemed capable of change.
